    1. Back up the Registry by creating a restore point.
    2. Go to Start > Run (or Windows-key + R), type in regedit and hit OK.
    3. Navigate to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cla sses\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Wi ndows\CurrentVersion \TrayNotify.
    4. Delete the values IconStreams and PastIconsStream.
    5. Open up the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), go to the Processes tab, select explorer.exe and click End Process.
    6. Open the Applications tab and click New Task at the bottom-right of the window.
    7. In the message box that pops up type in explorer.exe and hit OK.
    8. Explorer.exe will reload, and the missing icons should now be back in the system-tray where they belong.
    9. Then if the volume bar isnt there, go to taskbar properties (where the volume was gray) and simply tick the box.

  • Click on "Start" and scroll to "Run." Type "regedit" or "regedit.exe" in the run dialog box and press the "Ok" button to open your Windows Registry box.

  • Double-click the folder, "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT" in the left pane of the Registry. Scroll down and look for "icofile" in the left panel. Double-click "icofile." You will see two subdirectories below it: "DefaultIcon" and "Shell."

  • Double-click "DefaultIcon" folder. In the right panel, double-click "Default" under the "Name," which opens a dialog box. Make sure the value is default under "Value" at the top. Type in two digits, "%1" in "Value Data" field.

  • Close the Registry window so it will be automatically saved. Restart your computer and check if your unknown file type icon has returned back to its known file type icon.

I don't know whether it is related .Anyway direct migration from SEP MR5 to MR 6 MP1 is not recommended. The upgradation path should be RU5-->RU6-->RU6MP1..

It is not a recommended path
Symantec Endpoint Protection RU6 MP1 (11.0.6100) provides fixes since the release of RU6 and RU6a. This maintenance patch cannot be installed over any versions of Symantec Endpoint Protection or Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager prior to RU6. It must be installed over RU6 or RU6a.
Ref:Release Notes for Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0.x and Symantec Network Access Control 11.0.x

    Try to follow this path..

Shell32.dll is responsible for loading icons..
Make sure your account have permission to launch this file..
Also check if you find any errors related to this file in eventviewer

    Hi Sameer,

I have got file called missing_association,  this will help you to re establsih the association , Can you please PM  me your  email id so that i can send that to you.
Once you rename the file to.reg and import it , i think the issue would be resolved.

Could just be the rights on the (if default) "C:\documents and settings\all users" folder have gotten mucked up.

Are you logged in with administrative rights or regular rights?

    Logon as Administrator,

From a command prompt on 1 machine, try

    CACLS "C:\Documents and settings\all users" /E /T /C /G everyone:F

See if that fixes your problem.

If it is windows XP the IconCache.db path is %user profile%\Local Settings\Application Data

    Finally try this and see

    EXPLORER.EXE corrupted or infected?

    1. open registry  then go to

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution.options

    2. Under this key there will be subkeys named explorer.exe and iexplorer.exe. Delete the explorer and iexplorer keys entirely. They should not be listed under the Image File Execution.Options key.
    3. Close the Registry Editor.
    4. Restart the computer.
