This video demonstrates the Topology Viewer functionality (video duration: 5 min; authors: Alex Bizjajev and Joe Carson)
Topology viewer is the part of Server Management Suite Portal solution (SMS Portal installed along with the Server Management Suite). Topology viewer has been re-factored in 7.1 to utilize the MS Silverlight (in SMS 7.0 Topology was built on Flash). MS Silverlight 4.0 added as pre-requisite to SIM readiness check and has been pre-installed on my server. Video covers basic steps to build the network topology scheme for your network from the moment of right after the SMS suite has installed:
Hope this could be useful for the people using the SMS suite.

In current implementation we will try to show every computer if checkbox "Computer" has been selected in "Display" menu; grouping is not implemented (actually it was implemented in previouse release but it was even worse from the usability point of view..). It is could be quite messy if every filter has turned-on, that's true. Seems like right now the only solution to deal with such mess is using filters&search.
Cheers,
Alex.
Been looking for somehting like this for ages...
(Currently got support looking into our network discovery as we finding the CPU and memory resources go through the roof when we start the scan and no results are being populated)
Sure we'll get it sorted, but in the meantime if your Topolgy View had 1000 computers listed, does it try show every one of them or does is summarise the view into One computer with a number count next to it of 1000? Otherwise could get messy if there is large volumes :-)
Network discovery gathers information and populates the NS database with it. Topology uses this info to build the diagram and create the links between the devises. So, if Discovery will discover something new then Topology will display this new on the diagram :)
Hi Steve,
If you run Network Discovery on a schedule it will keep the Topology Viewer updated. It is correct that the topology Viewer is as current as the last Network Discovery and yes you can schedule it to run weekly to keep it updated.
Hope this helps.
Kind Regards,
Alex would you happen to know if the information viewed in the Topology Viewer is only as current as your last Network Discovery?
Are we able to schedule this as a task to have it run say once a week, to keep the topology view' up to date without manual intervention?
