SEP 12.1 - Licensing an unmanaged client

Sep 27, 2011 05:40 PM

Licensing an unmanaged client - referenced from SEP 12.1 Implementation Guide: To enable the submission of reputation data from an unmanaged client, you must install a paid license on the client. Use the following procedure to install a license on an unmanaged client. To license an unmanaged client 1 Locate and create a copy of your current Symantec Licensing File (.SLF). Use the same file that you used to activate your license on the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager. 2 On the client computer, place the copied license file into the Symantec Endpoint Protection client inbox. On the clients that use a pre-Vista version of Windows, the inbox is located at: Drive:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\CurrentVersion\inbox On the clients that use Vista or a newer version of Windows, the inbox is located at: Drive:\ProgramData\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\CurrentVersion\inbox\ If the license file is invalid, a folder named Invalid is created and the invalid license is placed into the folder. If the file is valid, it is automatically removed from the inbox after it is processed.

Hi,

If SEP Client is not on the same network & admin don't want clients to come over the WAN to take updates, can install client as a unmanaged client.

Or

If having very limited number of clients and don't wish to manage them individually, install them as unmanaged clients.

Hello there;

Can you confirm whether we could purchase SEP 12.x unmanged client licenses seperately without SEPM? Because one of the suppliers offered this in our country. Thanks.

Thank you this helped a lot!  Although I can't seem to find the inbox folder on a 2000 Server.  Any ideas?

SEP 11.0 clients (managed or unmanaged) do not take license files. SEP SBE 12.0 and SEP 12.1 is where license files were introduced.

Thanks for the video. I would prefer an unmanaged client which can be configured by the managers lu policy, directly exported from the SEPM. The client cant conntect to SEPM but your license is already in the client.

You don't need to install a license to an unmanaged client unless you would like it to participate with submitting reputation data.
