The difference is that client management suite focuses on clients (laptops, desktops) hence the name client management suite and that server management suite focuses on servers hence the name server management suite. The IT Management suite is an overall suite where you choose if the license you are going to use is for a client or a server. ITMS contains CMS, SMS & AMS. ServiceDesk & Wise Package Studio (WPS is EOL) are NOT included (anymore) in ITMS.

Symantec need to update their sales literature then, the current brochures on the website say ServiceDesk and Wise are still included.

    Thanks P.van Leeuwen and andykn101,

But can I purchase only CMS OR SMS and if so then what I can do with it and what component I can use.

No, you can purchase both. If you have 2000 desktops and laptops and 500 servers you would purchase 2000 Client Management Suite Licenses and 500 Server Management Suite licences. You could then install both on the same Notification Server but you'd have to use the License Management Portal to combine some of the individual solution licenses.

Then you will be able to:

    Inventory

    Deploy OS

    Deploy Software

    Remote Control

Meter applications (not supported on servers)

    Real time management (WMI etc)

Out of band management (ASF etc.)

    Thanks andykn101,

If have around 10,000 client system and I need to deploy MS patch then which are more suitable for it?

I think you can just buy Patch Management Solution, I believe you can patch Clients and Servers with that but you'd need to check with your Symantec reseller for the exact licensing requirements.

One extra I think you get with Server Management Suite is Monitor Solution.

    Hi andykn101,

    Thanks to Response,

Can you please tell me what a Symantec Management platform is? And how I can explain it. If suppose I have Symantec management console (7.1).It means I am having SMP?

"The Symantec Management Platform is a set of core services that all of the parts of IT Management Suite
share. These services can include aspects such as security, reporting, communications, and data storage."

So it's the Notification Server, which hosts the Symantec Management Console, database, site servers and base Symantec Management Agent. For more info see the ITMS Planning and Implementation Guide on the list here:
