I can't even get past the first step - connecting to the old 7.0 database either through settings -> database settings or during the initial 7.1 install through the SIM.

Hello Rhys,

Can you elaborate more on your setup? Is your database is on remote location or you have imported it to your new SMP 7.1 machine.

My database is on an off-box SQL 2008 server (on the same subnet). I made a backup of it and tried to upgrade, but after a few minutes SIM just told me it failed.

I have had similar problems in the past (not with the 7.1 installer) and it may be worth trying this:

Found that the database could not be configured because smaller solutions were not installed (like SEP connector etc.), but I could not install them at same time as CMS. Found this worked:

1. Installed CMS with a new database
2. Once installation is complete install additional components you may have had (SEP Connect, Servicedesk etc.)
3. Go into database settings and point server to old database. The configur procedure should now run through without an error.
