    Hello,

It's possible with different ways, however it's not supported and clients may not communicate with managers.

The best way for upgrading your environment is first upgrade your managers then upgrade your clients.

Do you know if there's a reboot at the end of the installation for SEP 12.1 RU1 MP1 for both clients and servers? This information will assist with migration strategy.

For SEPM reboot is not mandatory. But for clients it is better to restart if your clients have NTP installed.(But this can be scheduled).

Will clients on 12.1.671.4971 (RTM) be able to check in normally to servers on the latest 12.1 RU1 MP1 and will these servers be able to managed those clients normally?

    Pete,

I will be upgrading my SEPM to 12.1 RU1 MP1, but I still have clients on the 12.1.671.4971, RTM, version. Will those clients be able to check into the SEPM after the upgrade normally and will I be able to manage those clients normally?

    Hello,

It is always recommended that you migrate the SEPM and Clients from the SEP 12.1 RTM to SEP 12.1 RU1 and then to SEP 12.1 RU1 MP1

    SEP 12.1.671 >> SEP 12.1 RU1 >> SEP 12.1 RU1 MP1

Yes, the clients would be able to report back to the SEPM without any issues upon migration.

    2) Upgrading or migrating to Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.1101 (RU1 MP1)

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH187753

    NOTE:  About Migration paths

Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.1101.401 (RU1 MP1) can migrate seamlessly over the following:

    Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.1000.157 (RU1)

    Hope that helps!!

Please refer to the articles below:
    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH131718
    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH131660

Even if Symantec recommends to use the same build everywhere (SEPM, SEP) to take benefits of all improvements, a SEPM can manager older or newer version of SEP clients.

However, as previously mentioned by other people, I would always suggest to upgrade the SEPM first.

    Mithun,

What is the number of reboots required to migrate clients from SEP 12.1.671 to SEP 12.1 RU1 MP1 given the migration path to be SEP 12.1.671 >> SEP 12.1 RU1 >> SEP 12.1 RU1 MP1? That looks like 2, correct?

    Hello,

Migrating the SEPM would not require any reboots. However, when Migrating the SEP clients you may require a reboot of the SEP client machines. Network Threat Protection (firewall) drivers would require a restart of the machines to get themselves activated. However, these could be taken care off by creating custom package and avoiding the restart of machines.

Creating custom client installation packages in the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager console version 12.1

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH165801

NOTE: You may have to restart the machine before the next migration or once the machine is ideal and out of production hours; whichever is earlier.

So, I guess you are correct. 2 restarts are required given the migration path to be SEP 12.1.671 >> SEP 12.1 RU1 >> SEP 12.1 RU1 MP1.

    Hope that helps!!

    Mithun,

So to get a client from RTM to 12.1 RU1 MP1, instead of installing RU1 and then RU1 MP1, I can just simply uninstall RTM and install RU1 MP1, correct?

For those who said I needed to install RU1 before MP1. I was able to manually upgrade RTM directly to MP1 without any issues. What gives?
