  • 1.  Unable to decrypt USB drive

I'm running PGP WDE 10.2 on Windows Vista. When I attempt to decrypt a USB drive, I'm prompted for the passphrase, then presented with a PGP error informing me that I cannot decrypt this drive because I am not authorized to do so by my administrator. I get the same result with User Access Control disabled. I can decrypt non-removeable drives. What's going on here?

Are you in a commercial setting where USB drives are required to be encrypted?  If you are, you should be prompted for the encryption when you connect to a non-encrypted USB Drive, and be unable to use the drive in that  setting until you encrypt it.

No, I'm not in an enterprise setting. The system is a stand-alone laptop, and the drive is a USB-connected, 120GB 2 1/2" Western Digital (not a flash drive). Any ideas?

I'm guessing that the install file was also not from a Universal Server?

Please check the Security tab of the disk's properties and see if Everyone is set for Full Control.

    No Universal Server.

Granted all users full control but still can't decrypt. The exact error message text is: "Unable to decrypt: Not permitted by your Administrator (-12198)."

The only errors similar to this that I can find anything on, are in relation to use of the Universal Server.

This is why I asked about whether a PGP Universal customized PGP installation file may have been used for the install - it could cause such problem if such a custom PGP installation package was used when there is no contact with a Universal Server.

Are you running from Local Administrator?

Can you confirm that you have full access to the USB volume? Check in security tab...

If you do right click on the pgp lock on the system tray , can you see "Update Policy"  ?
