  • 1.  Transferring from one server to another

    Good morning, I am going to upgrade from my 11x SEPM server to 12x...The old server is a 2003 Windows server based OS 32 Bit System

    The new one will most likely be a 2008 64 Bit system...I want to do get SEPM 12 on the new PC and import all of the same structure I had on the old server as well as the databases, exceptions and any other policies. I also would like to do this with optimization for minimal bandwidth usage.

    Can you please provide instructions?

    follow the DR steps for SEP 11 and install SEPM 11 and restore the communication for clients. Once confirmed, then upgrade to SEPM 12.X

    Configure the content revisions available to clients to reduce bandwidth

    Set the number of content revisions that are stored on the server to reduce bandwidth usage for clients.

    • Typically, three content updates are delivered per day. You configure the number of updates that are retained on the server. You generally want to store only the most recent content updates. A client that has not connected during the time it takes the server to accumulate the set number of updates, downloads an entire content package. An entire package is in excess of 100 MB. An incremental update is between 1MB and 2MB. You configure the number of stored updates to a setting that minimizes how often a client must download a complete update package.

    • As a rule of thumb, 10 content revisions use approximately 3.5 GB of disk space on the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager.

    Hi,

    There are two methods to move Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) from one machine to another:

    Method 1: if the SEPM server keeps the same IP and host name, you can refer to "Best Practices for Disaster Recovery with the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager"

    Method 2: if the new SEPM server has a different IP and host name, there are two alternatives:

    1. Use replication to install a new SEPM and keep the policy the same with old SEPM. See "How to move Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager from one machine to another"

    Note: Replication is an option, but its better not to go for that. Because if you do replication and remove the old server that is the Primary SEPM , in future if you want to do replication you will not be able to do so.

    2. Install a new SEPM, then use the Sylink file to establish communication between the new SEPM and the existing SEP client through sylink replacer tool. You can import SEP 11 policies into SEP 12.1

    Note : Sylink replacer tool is most commonly used option because it's easy to use.
