First i wantetd to describe our problem, then ask for insight:

    Problem

Users who are Running Outlook 2007  and Symantec Endpoint Protection version 11.0.6100.645 are reporting Performance issues when sending, recieving email.  These performance issues consist of hangs, or process crashes.

    Insight:

Given that we have virus scanning enabled on the server side, is Outlook Auto-Protect Needed on the client?  Woudlnt the File System Auto-Protect be sufficient?

If that is the case, what is the Risk of turning off Outlook Auto-Protect?

Do you have any security for Exchange server's Mailbox ? not a Antivirus on the server but Mail Security for exchange ? If yes then you don't need Outlook Auto-Protect.

What OS is the issue occurring on? Check the Client protection features by platform to make sure your OS is supported

    What is Auto-Protect ?

Outlook Auto-Protect: Outlook Auto-Protect is a type of ongoing or background scan. This scan gives Outlook and Outlook Express users additional protection from threats sent by email. If you use Outlook or Outlook Express, it is recommended to have this enabled.

Auto-Protect does not scan the email that uses secure connections, it will continue to protect computers from risks in attachments. It scans email attachments when you save the attachment to the hard drive.

We had deployed Outlook auto protect early on in the project. We withdrew if from the clients as our Exchange environment is already scanned. It made a big difference in performance.
