    Posted Nov 21, 2011 05:32 AM

    Hi,

We have tried to upgrade our SEPM servers from 12.1 to 12.1 RU1 and when the installation tries to start the services I get the following error...

"Error 1920. Service W3SVC (W3SVC) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services"

Now the odd part is these are Windows 2008 R2 servers but they DON'T have IIS installed on them so there is no W3SVC service configured.  HOwever they were previously upgraded from v11 RU6 MP3 and the servers oringinally had IIS on them (IIS removed when SEP 12.1 installed as this does not need IIS).

The only option left is to click on Cancel which rolls back part of the install.

If we then retry the install it goes straight to the part of the install where the packages/schema are updated and everything seems fine.

Has anyone else come across this issue???

    Cheers!

    Hello,

Could you please check in the services.msc, if you have any service W3SVC which is not running.

I completely agree with you that it does not use IIS in the Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.

However, checking in the services.msc window is worth.

    Hi,

Check this article if it could help.

Symantec AntiVirus: "Error 1920". "The Service failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."

    Thanks for the input folks.

I've done a bit of digging around on both the servers I upgraded (which both error'd).

There is no mention of W3SVC in the registry on either of the servers and nothing showing in the Services.

I've attached the Install Log file and also the screenshot of the error for info...

I've checked the article Chetan posted and the permissions are all fine on the keys.  I am unable to make the changes to the domain controllers though to confirm if that is the cause or not.  There is insufficient evidence to point at that at this time.

This error can be caused by the W3SVC service not being present on the machine you are installing to (IIS is not installed), or it might be the result of something failing when the installer attempts to stop/restard the IIS service during installation.

Additionally, I believe our installers respect the state IIS is in when the installer is started. So if you were to manually stop IIS before running the installer, the installer will neither need to stop IIS for you, nor will attempt to restart IIS after installing the samples. So if you do indeed have IIS installed on your machine, another workaround that would allow you to still get the samples and docs installed on your server would be to just open the command prompt and type iisreset /stop *before* running the installer.  When the installer has finished , you can start iis again manually by typing iisreset /start.

abnscbnklfoo IIS is not on the system which is why it's odd we get that error message!

It was on the system before we upgraded to SEP 12.1 as it was running SEP 11 which does require IIS.  However once we upgraded to v12.1 IIS was removed and is no longer present.

The error shows up when upgrading to v12.1 RU1

Currently having the exact same issue.  I have opened up a support case and am working on the issue.  Will update if we have any luck!

    Hi.

I've had the same issue, on my test server (in the beginning sep 11, then upgraded to 12.1 and now upgraded to 12.1RU1).

On the error message popup I clicked on "cancel".

I re-run the installation process and I choose "Repair". After that, the Management Server Configuration Wizard started as if this was my first installation or a Disaster Recovery operation.

I checked the information about site name, ports, DB type and, after typing the DB's password (for the user SEM5) the process told me my DB had not been upgraded to the latest schema, so the DB Upgrade Wizard started.

After the operation completed, the SEP manager service started and I logged correctly into the console.

I'll open a ticket to the support to have more info about this issue, because in the next months I will upgrade lots of SEP managers of our customers.

I to am having an issue upgrading to 12.1.  The server was upgraded from 11.0 so has previously had IIS on it which was removed when upgraded to 12.  I have attached my SEPM_Inst.log file.

    Attachment(s)

    7z
    SEPM_INST.7z   8 KB 1 version

After receiving the error I restarted the server and attempted to run the install again.  No problems the second time.  Install completed successfully, console is running and testing client upgrades now.

    Hello all,

    I had a similiar problem:
We have a few SEPM 11.0 which we have upgraded to 12.1.
When trying to uninstall a SEPM 12.1, we get also the error 1920 because of the W3SVC-service (as the W3SVC-service does not longer exist on the system).

    Workaround for us:
Either create a service W3SVC (on the CMD, type sc create W3SVC ...) or install IIS again.
Then uninstall SEPM 12.1 (now without 1920 error), and afterwards delete the created service (sc delete W3SVC) or uninstall IIS.

    Best regards
