SEP-Client installation issue: Client-Installation aborts without error message

  • 1.  SEP-Client installation issue: Client-Installation aborts without error message

    Posted May 29, 2009 06:53 AM
Client installation destination system: w2k Server (former SAV CorporateAV 10 distribution server)
    Previous Tasks:
    - Deinstalled System Center Console.
    - Deinstalled Symantec Live Update Server
-> Used Symantec "CleanWipe.exe" to clear every Symantec Product.

As soon is I try to install a SEP-Client at this Server:
Installation starts -> "Preparing to install" -> "Preparing to remove older versions of this application" -> NOTHING HAPPEN... no error, no installation -> nothing...
I try to install from SEPM remotely -> SEPM-Console told me installation "SUCCESSFULL" -> but nothing happen at this client too.

Has anybody an idea/solution... another clearing tool?

    Thanks a lot in advance!

check for the logs under %temp% folder ( go to start --> run --> type %temp%, click ok.)

search for return value 3  in this log, this will help you know hwy the installation failed.

    Cheers
    Pete!

I hav seen this before it do you have Windows 2000 SP4 .If not the apply SP4 as SEP is not compatible with anything below SP4.
Also check if your IE is version 6.

If you have everything in place still you are not able to install.
    open the SEP_INST log from
    start - run - %temp%
look for first Return value 3 and post 10 lines above it here for us to read.

It's failing on uninstalling AMS (Alert Management Server? - can't remember).  Can you uninstall AMS manually?  If so, uninstall AMS and try re-installing the client.  If that doesn't work, call tech support to uninstall AMS manually (or if there's a script like Cleanwipe that will remove AMS).

Manually removal for AMS does not solve it.
What everybody in Tech support follows is
Install Windows Installer Cleanup utlity and Remove AMS.

Windows Installer CleanUp Utility can be downloaded from
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

    - I tried to remove manual http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2006030613294348?Open&docid=2002031914291648&nsf=ent-security.nsf&view=docid
    - I tried "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility -> msicuu2.exe"
    -> Same issue -> same install-error-log...
-> "Add/Remove Programs": AMS exists 2 times -> Remove -> Error: "Fatal error during installation."

Exsists there a global cleaning tool " like CleanWipe" for cleaning all symantec programs/files/links/reg-keys?

Thanks a lot for your assistance!

Were you able to take it out using windows installer cleanup utility ?
It would be at the top of the list AMS 10.0.0.0 there might be more than one instance of AMS.
So check it again highlight -remove..if you get an error--click OK.
It should be gone from Add/Remove programs.
Then you should be able to install SEP.
In Symantec i had closed atleast 100  cases using Windows Installer CLeanup utlity removing AMS.It should work.
