  • 1.  SEP 12.1: Unmanaged clients; not tracking licenses

    Posted Apr 03, 2013 11:55 AM

Hello all.  I have a customer with some systems in locations that aren't tied into the main office via any means of private networking, thus while the head office has SEPM with a certain # of licensed systems, these branch offices are currrently with some Unmanagec clients.  So the license count in SEPM is of course incorrect.

Is there a way to tell SEPM that a certain number of licenses are in use even if those system don't report to SEPM?

    Thanks.

These would need to be made managed in order for the SEPM to see them.

You can obviously license an unmanaged client per the KB article http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO81071  but there is no further reporting for it since it is unmanaged.

You need to tell SEPM about licenses if its managing them. SEPM wil have no idea about unmanged. You can count those manually No issues with respect to audit.

    Hello,

For SEP 12.1, unmanaged client licensing is required. Make sure the Unmanaged clients are licensed.

If we install unmanaged client Sonar, IRON and other new features do not work. To enable the submission of reputation data from an unmanaged client, you must install a paid license on the client.

Use the following procedure to install a license on an unmanaged client.

    Hope that helps!!

Thanks all.  Perhaps it will be best if I instead just put some VPN's together between the branch sites and the main office so the clients can report in.  I haven't learned how yet, but I would then set up a GUP at each site, but in terms of reporting in - is there much data that would traverse the VPN link?

I can always re-post as a new thread when I come close to actally doing it, provided somebody can here now tell me if it's a reasonably low bandwidth process to have a few clients report to SEPM over a VPN via DSL-level links (less than 1Mbps upload from branch site)

    Hi,

SEP 11.x licensing is basically just a "paper" license product.  However, with SEP 12.1 the licensing is a "software" license product and uses a  license file.  It is important to become familiar with this license concep
