  • 1.  SEP 11.0.6 Rolling back during install MS Server 2008 R2

    Posted Sep 10, 2010 12:22 PM

I have a windows server 2008 R2 system that I have recently uninstalled Symantec Endpoint Protection from. I am now trying to re-install it and during the "Configuring services" portion of the install it automatically rolls back and says that the install was interrupted. I have checked Event logs and I get Event ID's 11708 and 1033. I have found This article http://service1.symantec.com/support/ent-security.nsf/docid/2009110411364348?Open&seg=ent which sounds like what I am experiencing but the solution appears to require the endpoint protection Manager which I am not currently using. I have tried to create a package with the manager however and the install still fails. I have also called Technical Support and attempted to use Symantec Clean Wipe on the system and try to re-install. The installation still fails.I have tried to install just Live update first then install SEP.  Any help is greatly Appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Josh

Go to Start-Run, and type: %temp%

    Hit enter.

Look for sep_inst.log file. Post the complete  file  over here.

Which version are you trying to install?

Supported version are RU5 and later.

Try using Local Admin account to login to the computer and install SEP Client.

Do you want me to post the entire file contents? The file is about 10MB in size. I tried to attach the file but it will not allow me to.

I am trying to install SEP Version 11.0.6005.562

I have tried to install using the local computer Administrator account.

    Thanks,

    Josh

Check if the Server service is started.

Go to Start > Run > Services.msc, check for "server" service.

If not started start this service and try the installation.

are you trying to install it from a shared drive?

if so copy it locally and run the install

install should be from the console session only.

if you have any drives mapped; please remove and run the install

Do you have any other symantec product installed?

What error do you get when trying to delete C:\ProgramData\Symantec

Try rebooting your server once then delete that folder then try installing SEP..If still you are not able to delete that folder then try deleting it with unlocker utility.

It may also be true that your installer needs to be reregistered.

    1) Click Start/.../ Run
    2) Type msiexec /unreg and press enter and wait until it appears to have finished.
    3) Go back to Start > Run
    4) Type msiexec /regserver and press enter

Restart the server and try to install....

Try this and see if that helps

Make sure all symantec folder are delted from the computer

Install  Liveupdate using lusetup.exe from the SEPWIN64 folder

    Reboot the machine

Run the SymantecANtvirus64.msi from the SEPWIN64 folder

If that install goes well and good else paste the complete SEP_Inst.log

CleanWipe_v.6.0 run the tool to completely erase the traces of previous SEP client, then go back and try to install the SEP client, remember to install the SEP versions 11.0.6

I have tried to install LiveUpdate first and then run the install, Installation failed.

I have verified permissions on the C: drive. This server was a freshly installed server. It is now a terminal server. I'm not sure if that would make any differences.

The Version of cleanwipe that I have obtained from Symantec was v. 6.0.

    Thanks,

    Josh

    For Process Monitor

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx

Try installing Malwarebytes or Norton Power Eraser and Run a full scan once.

This sounds like a good candidate for CleanWipe. Call Symantec Support and request the utility.

    Hit enter.

Look for sep_inst.log file. Post the complete  file  over here.

I had the same problem with Windows 2008 R2 Foundation. I found the solution thanks to this particular forum.

I installed Windows 2008 R2 Foundation, then I promoted the server as a Domain Controller.

I logged in as Administrator of the domain and I installed Backup Exec System Recovery 2010, SEPM 11 MR6 without problems, but installing SEP on the application server crashed. This was due to the fact that the SEP could not write into the registry keys as HKEY_LM / Software / Symantec which did not own and which had been created when you install Sber 2010.

    I uninstalled

    1. SEPM
    2. SEP
    3. 2010

I deleted the following folders if presentt

    1. C: \ Program Files \ Symantec
    2. C: \ Program Data \ Symantec
    3. C: \ Program Files (x86) \ Symantec
    4. C: \ Program Files \ Symantec AntiVirus
    5. C: \ Program Files \ Common Files \ Symantec Shared
    6. C: \ Documents and Settings \ All Users \ Application Data \ Symantec
    7. C: \ Users \ All Users \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Start Menu \ Programs \ Symantec Endpoint Protection

Following Also delete reg keys if present

    1. HKLM \ Software \ symantec
    2. HKLM \ Software \ Wow6432Node \ Symantec
    3. HKCU \ Software \ symantec
    4. Also remove all the contents of% temp%

    I reinstalled the order

    1. SEPM 11 MR6
    2. SEP 11 MR6
    3. Sber 2010

    and everything went OK

I have verified that the problem is due to the installation of Sber 2010 before SEP 11MR6, because the installation of the antivirus client creates the following keys:

    • HKEY_LM \ Software \ Symantec \ CommonClient
    • HKEY_LM \ Software \ Symantec \ InstalledApps
    • HKEY_LM \ Software \ Symantec \ SymantecEndpointProtection
    • HKEY_LM \ Software \ Symantec \ SymEvent

    but these are inaccessible.
