  • 1.  SEP 11.0 Upgrade

    Posted Jan 30, 2014 09:13 PM

    Hi guys

The company i work for is currently on SEP 11.0, SEPM runs on server 2008 R2 and most clients are on XP Pro SP2/3 which I'm gradually upgrading them to Win7. 32/64

I also plan to upgrade symantec 11.0 but i'm not quite sure yet whether to do it or not because at the moment it works quite well, for as long as the server virus engine is up-to-date and clients are updated, it provides a really good security for the network.

What would be the next SEP version to upgrade to if i decided to upgrade. I've read some online documents which were quite helpfull and I'm posting here to get some public views/support to help with my decisions.

    Appreciate your time

Ideally you want to move to SEP 12.1.4 as 11.x has started the end of life process.

All documentation needed to migrate is here:

Upgrading or migrating to Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.4 (RU4)

The process is relatively painless. What's the version of 11.x you're currently running?

upgrading to SEP 12 should be considered as SEP 11 will be EOL soon.

Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 11.x will reach End of Limited Support (EOLS) on January 5, 2014 and End of Support Life (EOSL) on January 5, 2015. This includes all maintenance packs and patches. Symantec recommends that all customers upgrade to the latest version of Symantec Endpoint Protection, 12.1.x.

There is no cost to upgrade for customers with a current maintenance contract

There are few reason for upgrading.

    1. Your version is near EOL.

    2. ADC policy is not supporting for 64 bit systems in 11.x, as you have mention that you are currently running with Window 7 64 bit systems.

Application and Device Control policies in Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 are not applied to 64 bit clients

    3. Your current version is not compatible for Window 8 and 8.1 as it is supported in latest one.

hi thanks everyone for your replies and apologies for the late reply

i found your comments very helpful, gave me a lot of support with making my decisions.

definitely i'll gradually upgrade to the next version of SEP as most have suggested.

Thanks for pointing out important points like EOL/EOSL, Compatibilty and Best practices. I was aware of some compatibility issues with the current SEP version on our network but not the EOL/EOSL, i missed that during my findings, thanks for bringing that up.

you know companies are money cautous many times and i just need to do some home work first before getting bold with my recommendation of a SEP upgrade as well.

thanks for the supportive links too guys

    appreciate your time

    gust

thanks sumit for your valid points

with Win7 x64, yes i noticed that after installing the 64bit win7 on  two machines, i eventually installed SEP client x64 after installing symantec live but i still have problem with updating it

With Win8, the company i worked for discouraged using Win8 yet, but before they give a nod i must deploy an SEP version that will acccomodate current and future OS

    regards

    gust

Before download the latest 12.1.4 package you need to Upgrade Serial Number. To upgrade your serial number, go to Symantec Licensing Portal: https://licensing.symantec.com Log in or register, and upgrade your license serial number to a 12.1 license number. More information about upgrading your serial number can be found here: http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO56030 How to upgrade your SEP11 license to SEP12.1 online Alternatively, this can be done by contacting Symantec Customer Care, quoting your old serial number.

    Hi Guys,

thanks for your support comments again on this thread. After reading through helpful links provided here am confident and ready to do the upgrade. I've done the SEP 11.X best practises for disaster recovery with SEPM and am ready to get the new version on however i have an issue which i hope you can help me on. The current SEP 11 was installed by previous technicians, I joined the company 4 months back and as fas as i know neither do i or the admin here know or have a record of the SEPM encrypted password used at the initial installation and for accessing the SEPM settings. Is there a file somewhere that store this password or a way to reset this password? While going through the SEP 11 best practises, my restore will have issues since i don't know the password. If i can't recover the password can i do a fresh install of SEP 12.X instead of upgrading? Appreciate your time

It's automatic unlocked after 15 min

Make sure that the resetpass.bat was run once the account was out of the lock period.
