  • 1.  Remote EP Install Works Then Stops Working

    Posted Mar 06, 2011 11:12 PM

    Hi.

I connected to the server through the Microsoft SBS Remote Web Workplace.  This is basically terminal service admin mode.

I installed a clean install of Enpoint Management Console.  This is the current version EP11 that is offered on the fileconnect website.  The install worked fine and I configured the console and all was well.

I then was having a problem getting live update to work.  Twice I received error 4.  This server had an unmanaged client install in place and so I thought that maybe that was the issue that was causing problems with live update.  So, I removed the client and was prompted to restart.  After restart I'm no longer able to log in to the console.  I'm getting a geneal Server Error message.

I know the credentials are right so something else is wrong.

The database shows as started in services but the manager console does not.  When I try to manually start it doesn't and a message is thown stating that some services are idle when not in use or something to that effect.

I'm concerned because I have seen a post just a minute ago that says you can't install the console remotely.  That it will work for up to 24 hours and then stop working.  I'm almost certain that I have installed SEP console remotely before with no problems.  I for certain manage the consoles remotely with no issues.

    Help appreciated.

Try reinstall using remote with "Console access"

    See this KB -

Product corruption or an install failure happens during an installation or migration while using an remote session.

    Hello,

Please check the Symantec Knowledgebase article:

'How to install Symantec Endpoint Protection and Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager through Remote Desktop'

    Hey all.

Update.  I went out to the customer site yesterday and removed the Endpoint installation, rebooted and reinstalled.  The install said it was successful but I still am getting the same error message when I try to log in to the Endpoint console.

So, to recap, here is where we are at:

    -          Server OS is Server 2008 Standard.  Patched to current, not a domain controller.

    -          The EP Protection Managers has gone through a successful local console install.

    -          The database service starts correctly.
    -          I am presented with the console logon dialog box.
    -          When I log in, I am presented with this error:

“Failed to connect to the server.  Make sure that the server is running and your session has not timed out.  If you can reach the server and cannot log on, make sure that you provided the correct parameters.  If you are experiencing network issues, contact you system administrator.”

No events are logged in the windows event logs when this occurs.

    -          The Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager service is not started.  When I attempt to start this service I receive the following error:

“ The Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager service on Local Computer started and then stopped.  Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs. “

    -          The following events ERRORS are then logged in the application event log in the following order:

ID=4097 // The LoadLibrary function failed for the following reasons:  The specified module could not be found.
ID=4096 // Could not load the Java Virtual Machine.
ID=4098 // The semsrv service failed to start.

My hunch is that solving the first two ID errors will resolve the problem.  Why (what is) LoadLibrary function failing.  And the Java Virtual Machine is not loading.  If the EP Manager needs the Java Virtual Machine  then that is your reason.  Now, just how to fix.

    Help appreciated.

you could update / reinstall Java.

    Or.

I suggest looking at tomcat logs, as semsvc.exe is a tomcat engine.

    \program files\SEPM\tomcat\logs

    catalina.out, scm-server-0.log and scm-server-1.log

    Thanks others for responding.

    Symantec TECH123142 provides the answer.

Can I say how LAME it is that the Symantec installer does not check for or accomodate for the proper placement of this library?  I have roughly six+ hours of time tracking down this issue, including an on site visit to the client because the initial call I placed to support stated that installations really should be done locally at the console.

Come on Symantec this is the third or fourth revision of the product since you purchased it.  Almost every other app installed that uses this library places it into it's own folder (including Symantec Live Update).  I also think it was the removal of the unmanged EP client on this system that removed the .dll file in the first place.  I did that becuase I couldn't get Live Update to work in the console after installing the first time.  After I rebooted for this uninstall that is when the probem first started.  All this on a brand new 2008 server -- are you kidding me? :-o

    Some additional notes.

If you have installed the most recent live update you will find the appropriate version of msvcr71.dll located in the program files folder for live update.

You also should copy back in msvcp71.dll

In order to locate appropriate versions of the file you need to unhide system files and folders and in search choose options and and checkbox to include system files and folders in the search.

The most recent versions of the library I see are 7.10.6030.0
