  • 1.  question on licensing - how do unmanaged clients work?

    Posted Nov 19, 2011 02:29 PM

Installing SEP 12.1 SBE for the first time.  I notice that the management console now requires a license file or serial #.  I also saw an article stating that clients will not receive definitions if the license is not valid.

We also plan on having several unmanaged clients on PCs in remote offices.  Do these need to have license files installed on them somehow?

    Thanks!

    Hello,

Correct, SEP SBE 12.1 requires a License.

I would suggest you to go through this Article:

    Licensing Symantec Endpoint Protection

    Also, try the steps below:

In the email received with the SEP 12.1 serial number there is the option to the download of the license file (.slf).

    1. Save the license file into the machine
    2. Unzip the license file
    3. In the License Activation Wizard select I have a Symantec License file (.slf)

Admin > Licenses > Activate license > Activate a new license > I have a Symantec License file (.slf)

    4. Select Next
    5.
Select Add file (browse for the file)
    6. Select the license file and complete the wizard.

In regards to the UnManaged Clients, check this Video:

    Hope that Answers!!

So what happens if a client is installed unmanaged without a license or the license expires?  Does it stop functioning or stop updating its definitions?

It would work as a Trial ware (Till 60 days.) and would then stop taking virus defs.

Is there a place in the software that indicates it is currently unlicensed or when the existing license will expire?

Is this the Small Business version only, or is it the same for the Enterprise version?

This seems very strange because the whole point of unmanaged clients for us is that the PCs are not in the office or easily accessible.  Requiring a new license file be installed every year will cause headaches.

    Thanks

For SEP 12.1 unmanaged client licensing is required. If we install unmanaged client Sonar, iron and other new features do not work. To enable the submission of reputation data from an unmanaged client, you must install a paid license on the client. Use the following procedure to install a license on an unmanaged client.

Is there a place in the software that indicates if it is currently unlicensed or when the existing license will expire?

Is there a Symantec document that lists exactly what features will work and not work when a client is unmanaged and unlicensed or the license has expired?

This is a major issue for us as manually installing a license file on every unmanaged client every year is not a simple task.
