  • 1.  PXE-E55 error with 3Com Boot services

    Posted Aug 29, 2008 12:56 PM

    Hi,

I have installed 3Com Boot Services from the GSS 2.5 DVD on my Console Server which is running Windows 2003 Server.

I am using WinPE built from GBW as a Pre-OS but it seems there is a trouble between DHCP and TFTP servers.

DHCP server is the one of Windows 2003, TFTP server is the one of 3Com.

What happens when my client boots with PXE and tries to load the WinPE pre-OS :

    - the client system scans to get an IP address from the DHCP server

    - after a while (1 mn or more), the message showing the IP address allocated is displayed, immediatly followed by the error message :

PXE-E55 : ProxyDHCP service did not reply to request on port 4011.

What is strange is that everything is local to my GSS Console server so no ProxyDHCP is needed.

In the Windows DHCP server configuration interface I have set parameters 60, 66 and 67 but I didn't find anything related to the ProxyDHCP.

I have also searched the forum but did not find a solution when all is local to the same server.

    Thanks,

    Jean-Pierre

    Hi Jean-Pierre,

if PXE server is on different machine to DHCP server, you have to tick the ProxyDHCP option from PXE server.

from the machine you installed 3com pxe, goto control panel and double click 3com pxe.

from there, there is a tick box for Proxy DHCP.

can you double check whether it is ticked?

    Hi James,

    thanks for your answer.

I think my explanations were a little bit unclear.

In fact, my configuration is very simple :

I have only one server acting as PXE/DHCP/TFTP server.

As I use the same PXE boot menu for all clients, I am not using the 3Com PXE server.

I saw somewhere it was not mandatory in this case so I didn't start the PXE server service (but I could make a mistake).

I only have the Windows DHCP server and the 3Com TFTP server services running.

The problem is that when a system boots with PXE and tries to load the WinPE pre-OS :

    - it scans to get an IP address from the DHCP server

    - it gets this address after a while (1 or 2 mn, which is pretty long)

    - then, immediatly following this error message is displayed :

PXE-E55 : ProxyDHCP service did not reply to request on port 4011.

My question is : why is the system looking for a proxy DHCP as everything is running on the same server ?

Is it due to something wrong or missing in my configuration ?

    Thanks,

    Jean-Pierre

    Hi James,

I finally found a solution for this DHCP-TFTP problem.

I have unistalled everything, included the DHCP server from MS, then reactivated the same MS DHCP server and tested first with TFTP32d : it was operational.

I have then reinstalled the 3Com Boot Services TFTP server and the PXE-E55 problem has come back.

I have noticed that Com TFTP installation had added the parameter 60 (ClassID=PXEClient) in the environment of the DHCP server. I have desactivated the parameter and everything is now functionning normally.

    Best,

    Jean-Pierre

    Hi

I had the same problem as Jean Pierre and I resolved it with his solution. To desactivate the parameter 60 you can use this command :
netsh dhcp server delete optiondef 60
