I am new to Ghost Solution Suite and have downloaded and read the Ghost Implementation Guide.  I have GSS 2.5 installed and have the Ghost Client loaded on a lab with 30 PCs.  These 30 machines are in their own machine group in the Ghost Console.  I have an image ready (from a VMWare VMDK file) but need help actually performing the imaging process.  I would like the process to be zero touch if possible.  I need to restore the image to all 30 machines, change the SIDs and rename the machines back to their original name, join the machines back to the domain, perform a GPUPDATE and reboot and then reinstall the Ghost Client.  Does anyone know of a step by step guide to perform these tasks?  I did not find the Ghost Implementation Guide very helpful.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Steven Deere,

The below link will explain you as how to get started with Ghost 2.5.1
A step by step procedure about Image creating task and Image restoration task.
For changing the SID value in task window at the bottom you have an option to check a box to perform change the SID.

This was helpful but the doc you linked to shows to use the Advanced Clone option to use Ghostwalker to change the SID.  Since I also need to do a name change I assume I need to use Sysprep instead of Ghostwalker.  If this is not true - how to I get Ghostwalker to also perform a name change?  I did not see that as an option when I was setting properties for the Clone task.  Thanks!

    Hi Steven,

For the SID change, as mentioned by Sockkalingam you could check the "Use Ghostwalker to change SID" box. For a computer name change you could use the configuration task that is present in the Clone Task.

On the window where you select the Clone box, select the Configuration box as well. By doing it would open another tab on the top alongside the Clone tab. You could use that to change the computer name and many other settings.

Please find the link below that would give you a detailed idea about how to use the configuration task.

Almost there - I was able to successfully Clone the machine, Ghostwalk ran and changed the SID and the computer was renamed back to it's pre-clone name but I was unable to get the machine to re-join the domain.  Should joining the domain occur with the default configuration task or am I missing something?  Thanks!

    Steven,

If you manually edit the configuration for the machine you are working on you can specify the domain. Just click on the client you intend to rename and under the configuration tab there will be an edit button and from there you can specify what you need.

Just make sure that you have an account with rights to join computers to your domain. You can specify that setting if you haven't in console under Tools > Supported Domains List

    Hi Steven,

What Andrew says is perfectly correct. You could either do that or while running the configuration task, you could give the details of the Domain and make the machine join the domain after the cloning process is done.

    Hope that helps !

Here's what I've tried.  In the machine group I right clicked on the machine I am trying to clone and went to properties.  On the configuration tab I double checked the domain settings and all are correct.   On the tools menu under supported domains I made sure the domain was listed and I have a domain admin account listed for the console service account.  I then run the task to clone with default configuration option selected and the machine get the image, ghostwalk runs and the machine is renamed back to the original name but still does not join the domain.

I then tried under configuration resources to create a custom configuration with all of the domain information but when I try to run the task with the custom configuration it just keeps taking me back to the properties window and will not run.  When i look at the task scenerio it says "Custom Configuration - none of the target machines have a configuration change assigned. Task execution not possible - Task definition is not valid."  I assume this error is trying to tell me since I'm not changing anything to just use the default configuration instead of the custom - but when I run the default configuration it doesn't work.

Does the Ghost client need to be on my image that I'm pushing?  When I originally set up Ghost I pushed the client to all the machines I wanted to manage.  The only thing I can think is that after the clone task completes the machine loses contact with the Ghost Console and never joins the domain because the client is not on the image; however, if this were the case I don't see how the rename procedure is working.  If I need to have the client on the image how do I do that?  I've always just pushed it across the network from the console.
