  • 1.  Multiple SEPM v12.1 installations and Licensing.

    Posted Apr 04, 2013 12:10 PM

We are working on 4 isolated Windows domains and we want to manage antivirus updates separately on each.  So we are installing 4 SEPMs (v12.1) that are dedicated to each domain.  Each domain has around 30-40 client nodes.

Is one license with total number of clients for the 4 domains enough to cover all?

Or is it needed to have 4 individual separate licenses for each SEPM installation.

    Thanks for the help.

The way I've always understood it was that you need to license each SEPM individually if they're separate sites:

    License coverage: products and versions

License seats apply equally across product versions. For example, a license covers both version 11.x and 12.1.x clients within the same site.

    Hello,

To answer your question, When Purchasing / Migrating the License, you need to check -

    1) Number of sites / Locations and

    2) Number of clients.

    and then purchase the License.

A Symantec Endpoint Protection license applies to the Symantec Endpoint Protection clients. For instance, in a network with 50 endpoints, the license must provide for a minimum of 50 seats. Instances of the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager do not require a license.

A Symantec Endpoint Protection product license is applied to an entire installation regardless of the number of replicated sites or domains that compose the installation. For instance, a license for 100 seats covers a two-site installation where each site has 50 seats. Sites that are not joined through replication are considered separate installations and require separate licenses.

    and

License seats apply equally across product versions. For instance, a license covers installations where version 11.x and 12.x clients are both deployed within the same site.

    Check these Articles:

Thanks guys.  Yes they are different sites that are not replicating.

The articles you provided have been very helpful!

    One point of clarification though...

This link, which seems to be older, says separate licenses are required (see underlined):

    Article:HOWTO55135  |  Created: 2011-06-29  |  Updated: 2011-12-17  |  Article URL http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO55135

    License coverage- sites and domains

A Symantec Endpoint Protection product license is applied to an entire installation regardless of the number of replicated sites or domains that compose the installation. For instance, a license for 100 seats covers a two-site installation where each site has 50 seats. Sites that are not joined through replication are considered separate installations and require separate licenses.

However, this one which appears to have been updated more recently, seems to contradict (see underlined):

    Article:HOWTO80852 | Created: 2012-10-24 | Updated: 2013-01-30 | Article URL http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO80852

    icense coverage: sites and domains

A Symantec Endpoint Protection product license is applied to an entire installation regardless of the number of replicated sites or domains that compose the installation. For instance, a license for 100 seats covers a two-site installation where each site has 50 seats.

If you have not implemented replication, you may deploy the same .slf file to multiple Symantec Endpoint Protection management servers. The number of clients reporting to your management servers must not exceed the total number of licensed seats.

I may be interpreting both statements incorrectly/differently, but don't they seem to be contradictory?

    Thanks again folks!

    Ooops..

I was referring to the following statements.

    First link:

Sites that are not joined through replication are considered separate installations and require separate licenses.

    Second link:

If you have not implemented replication, you may deploy the same .slf file to multiple Symantec Endpoint Protection management servers. The number of clients reporting to your management servers must not exceed the total number of licensed seats.

HOWTO55135 was published for the initial release of 12.1 (it is a section out of the Implementation Guide), while HOWTO80852 was published for 12.1 RU2 (from the Installation and Administration Guide). In other words, HOWTO80852 is a newer version of HOWTO55135. I would go with the newer doc.

    Sorry for the confusion,
