LUA is an internal Liveupdate Server while SEPM Liveupdate is only a component used to download definitions either from such LUA server or from internet Symantec Servers. Some more documentation:

LUA 2.x is a great tool, when used (and configured) correctly.  If your SEPM can access the Internet, though, and the only Symantec product you have in your envionment is SEP, then LUA is probably not needed.

    Hello,

The Difference between LUA and Internal Liveupdate Server is nothing. Both are the same.

"SEPM internal live update" is when SEPM is using a Internal Liveupdate Server (LUA) for updating itself.

You can configure the Internal LiveUpdate server to download updates from a Symantec LiveUpdate server and send updates to client comuters..As per SEP admin guide you should use the LiveUpdate Administrator utility to update the LiveUpdate server. The LiveUpdate Administrator utility pulls the definitions updates down from a Symantec LiveUpdate server.

The default liveupdate settings policy has the clients "use the default management server (recommended)."

This will cause the clients to get content updates as part of the normal check-in process.

Adding a liveupdate server is not a necessary step to get clients to update via the SEPM.

    Hi,

    Internal LiveUpdate server

By default, client gets their updates from the management server through Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager. Most organizations should use the default management server for client updates. If you select the default management server and your environment contains Mac and Windows computers, Mac clients get their updates from the default LiveUpdate server. Organizations that have a lot of clients may want to use Group Update Providers (GUPs). GUPs reduce the load on the management server and are easier to set up than an internal LiveUpdate server.

    Follow the KB for details.

    LiveUpdate on SEPM

Check for new updates and download them to the site for client distribution. And you can specify where to get the updates by selecting source servers. Generally, only large networks implement different source servers for security and bandwidth optimization

And If you combining both we can see both are performing the same operation

    Regards

    Both are actually the same..

when you have multiple symantec products and one server has internet, then you install LUadmin and then forward all the requests to Luadmin. In SEPM under liveudpate policy  for your clients.. Its asking if you want to go to internet for updates or Luadmin or get it from SEPM.
