I am trying to install SEP 12 Management console on a VM test environment running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise.

I go through the wizard where I am able to connect to the database (SQL Server 2008 on another VM test environment), and at the end where it says "Data Collection", I click "Next", the Database attempts to be created and initialized, and then I get error, "Failed to connect to the database". Attached is a screenshot.

    How to troubleshoot this?

Also, when I click OK after receiving the error, I am taken back to the page, "Database Server Authenticatioin", and when I click "Connect to database" it works perfectly.

    Hello,

Restart the server machine and try running the upgrade.bat

    upgrade.bat is available in :

    <local drive>\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\bin\upgrade.bat

    Hope that helps!!

Mithun, I am trying to install SEPM on the machine, and it won't let me because at the final step it says, "Failed to connect to the database"

    Hello,

Is this a Fresh Installation or Migration??

Make sure the drive is not compressed. http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH163591

Check if there is any other process running port 2638

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH163787

If yes, Stop that process instance after the Management Server Configuration Wizard is configured with an alternate port.

    Secondly, check this Article:

Getting error "Failed to connect to database" when reconfiguring SQL database.

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH153188

    Hope that helps!!

I suspect the ports, is the sql server remote if yes then, have you installed SQL tools on this server ?

    Hi,

Start the Embedded database service. ( If this does not resolve the issue, then follow the steps listed below )

    Go to "C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\db\" and rename sem5.log to sem5.log.old

Click Start, click on Run and Type "CMD" then click OK

In the Command Prompt type: "CD C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\ASA\win32\" and press Enter this will change directories to the folder containing dbsrv9.exe.

To force the recreation of sem5.log. Type: "dbsrv9 -f "C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\db\sem5.db" and press Enter

Click Start, click on Run and Type "services.msc" then click OK and start the Symantec Embedded Database Service

Start the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager service

As the installer is accepting and validating the details in the "Conect to DB" section, then the only place you can check for what is going on, is under the SQL logs.

I suspect it'll be a permissions issue or something but the SQL log will tell you!

    #EDIT#

Also, make sure this test SQL server of yours doesn't have a compressed drive:

SMLatCST gave me a great idea!

The name of the database was prepopulated with the name of the old database which I deleted. Somehow, I believe that the new SEPM installation was trying to connect to a non-existant database.

I created an entirely NEW database and it now works!!!!!

    Some notes:

    1. Database was not on a compressed drive

    2. This was a fresh install of SEPM

    3. Database and SEPM are on two separate Virtual machines, both running Windows Server 2008

    You guys are AWESOME!!!
