  • 1.  Installed Inventory Solution 7 SP2 MR3, but no plug-in found

I did a fresh install of Inventory solution, but software resource for the plug-in was created. The package is actually in the correct location (D:\Program Files\Altiris\Notification Server\NSCap\bin\Win32\X86\Inventory\Agent Package), just no SW resource was created. When looking at the plug-in rollout policy, there was nothing listed under package name or program name.

I followed the instructions from TGiles here: http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/inventory-plug-windows-install-program-name-empty but it still did not fix it. There was still no resource found in our deliverable software area, and the package was still not downloading on clients.

Then, I tried was manually creating the software resource, but then it does not have the correct GUID to associate with the rollout policy so it was still not downloading even after running the NS.Package Distribution Point Update Schedule task.

Last thing I tried was a repair AND a full uninstall of the solution, but still no resource. Does anyone have any ideas? This server needs to be in production by tomorrow evening!

This is for Windows only. If you need the .exe, I can get that to you off site.

More then likely the software release information isn't being added to the database due to a conflict with an existing entry in the database with the same name.

    1. Open log viewer and have it filter on aexconfig.

    2. Run a configure of Inventory Solution using aexconfig. Aexconfig is found in the Notification Server\Bin folder. The default command would be aexconfig /configure "c:\program files\altiris\Inventory\config\Inventory.config"

    3. Monitor the logs for any errors, specificaly ones pertaining to not being able to add an item to the database. This error will provide you with the GUID of the existing entry that is causing the problem.

    4. Open Resource Manager and specify the GUID in the address bar and hit Enter.

    5. Choose the Delete Right-click action.

    6. Run another configure of Inventory Solution.

I tried this, but it did not work. The clients were still not getting a download source, even after a package refresh.

I followed those steps and all seemed to go well, but now when I got back to the "Inventory Plug-in for Windows Install" policy it again says "The program that this Agent installation refers to could not be located. Please select another program."

    Any ideas?

Try TGiles method to delete the entry and then import the file I set you (don't do a reconfigure).

Ah, but the Resource shows up in Deliverable Software in the catalog (I already did the reconfigure after deleting the offending GUID). I did notice that the Resource did not have any command lines associated with it under the package tab.

I think as a workaround for now I will just create a managed delivery task for the agent, but I'd love to know how to fix this completely.

Wait a minute, I misread then page for the agent rollout: There IS a package but no program/command line. I added them manually.

Additionally, I checked the client after doing TGiles method and it did infact download the agent, so that was the fix. Thanks a ton to the both of you!

I remember before MP2, there was a conflict with the Linux and Windows agent roll-out policies, don't know if that still holds true.
