  • 1.  Installation of SEP 12.1.3 on Server 2012

    Posted Aug 02, 2013 05:11 PM

    Hello,

I have recently replaced a Server 2003 R2 server with a Server 2012 server. I am currently running SEP 12.1.1000.157 RU1 throughout my network. I have SEP Manager installed on a Server 2008 machine. I have SEP Client installed on various machines (Windows XP, Vista, 7, and Server 2008) throughout the organization.

I attempted to install SEP 12.1.1000.157 RU1 on the Server 2012 with absolutely no success. That is when I learned about SEP 12.1.3.

I went to the following location and entered my Serial Number (https://symantec.flexnetoperations.com/control/symc/registeranonymouslicensetoken)

I then selected the Enlish 12.1 option. This brought me to the list of available downloads for 12.1.3.

That list included the following downloads:

    • Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_12.1.3_Part1_Installation_EN.exe
    • Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_12.1.3_Part2_Tools_EN.exe
    • Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_12.1.3_SEPM_EN.exe
    • Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_12.1.3_Win32-bit_Client_EN.exe
    • Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_12.1.3_Win64-bit_Client_EN.exe

    Naturally I downloaded everything.

Now, I cannot find any documentation which states which file I actually use and in what way. The download page mentions both Part1 and Part2 files, but does not discuss the remaining files. Nor do I understand how to utilize the files once they are extracted.

So my questions are as follows.

    1. I am currently running 12.1.1000.157 RU1 SEP Manager on a Server 2008 machine. All clients thus point to that machine and are running the same version. I wish to install a client on a Server 2012 machine and that appears to need to be 12.1.3. Do I need to upgrade my SEPM to 12.1.3?
    2. Will 12.1.3 even work with Server 2012? (Has anyone tested this? I know it states it, but I'm curious if there are any testimonies).
    3. If I need to upgrade my Manager, do I thusly need to upgrade all my clients?
    4. Which of the download files do I use to accomplish the upgrade of my Manager?
    5. Which of the download files do I use to accomplish the upgrade of my Client?
    6. In what order should I execute the files for installation/upgrade for Manager and Client?

    Thank you,

    Tennessee Paul

Server 2012 was first supported in SEP 12.1 RU2, so when you tried to install RU1 that is why it failed. RU3 is the latest so that's what you want.

How many clients do you have?

What you could is upgrade your old SEPM to RU3 and install RU3 on the new SEPM and set them up to replicate. Configure the Management Server List so all clients point to the new SEPM. Once they point to the new SEPM, you can turn off the old SEPM.

You can upgrade the clients after you upgrade the SEPM to RU3. SEPM 12.1 will manage any version of 12.1 so while it is recommended be on the same version for both SEPM and client, it is not necessary.

Download the files named Part1 and Part2. These contain everything you need to get started. Part1 contains the installs for SEPM and the clients (x86 and x64) while Part2 contains various helpful tools.

Hi Brian, I have 30 clients. I did not see a download for anything other than the files I listed above. Is RU3 the same as 12.1.3? Is part 2 a necessary install? What type of space does it require? Am I correct in understanding that the other 3 files I downloaded are not needed? Thank you for your help, Tennessee

    Yes, 12.1.3 = 12.1 RU3.

It is just a collection of useful tools, not necessary for install. Maybe a few hundred MB in size.

The other 3 files are the standalone installs for the clients and SEPM. Part1 already contains them.

With only 30 clients you can just replace the sylink on them with one from the new SEPM to get them to connect. It's a simple process to do from the SEPM

    Brian,

Thank you for the help. I have attempted to install/upgrade the SEPM on my Server 2008 and I keep receiving a notification stating "there are pending changes requiring a reboot" even though I have not changed anything and rebooted several times. 12.1.3 SEPM keeps returning this message when I run the installation exe.

    Thank you,

    Tennessee Paul

    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/pending-file-rename-operations

    Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager and locate

PendingFileRenameOperations and rename it to PendingFileRenameOperations2 and then try to install the product.

Open regedit and go to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager

    Delete the key "PendingFileRenameOperations"

    Run the install again
