I need to install an Enpoint 11 client and the server no longer exists.  The unistall process fails looking for a file on a share on the server.  I understand there is a utility available privately from Symantec (Clearwipe) that will remove this but to try to contact Symantec is a nightmare.  I run through all the option on the voice prompts of ther customer service phone line and end up in circles.

How do I get this off my computer?  the manual method would age me 1 year.

    Thanks

As I mentioned in my original post, I will age considerably do the manual method.  That is rediculous, especially when a utility to do i exists.  Why is it so hard to get the utility?

I installed Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 10.2 on a new Windows 2000 Server.  I was able to migrate clients from existing server.  However, several clients must be looking for a now non existant older NT server.  When I go on the pc and try to open Symantec, It asks for an id and password.  None of the ids/passwords I have been given work.  No one here noe nows what the old server passwords are.  How can I uninstall the old versions so I can push out the new?

    Thanks,

"find cleanwipe which will remove endpoint. google that as it is not from symantec."

Just to make it very clear. Cleanwipe is by Symantec.

It can be obtained by opening up a case with the tech support.

I would try and find the original msi before using cleanwipe.  You could copy it to the machine and point the registry uninstall string to it.  Then you would be able to uninstall via add/remove which will be a MUCH less painful process.

Either way that you uninstall it (cleanwipe or finding the original msi), I would still followup the uninstallation with running the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301.   It will save you some problems with reinstalls in the future depending on how troublesome the uninstall becomes.

    Good Luck,

Also you can google automated uninstall for Symantec for tips on which reg keys need to be modified so passwords are not required.

Hello, please provide me with credentials and link to CleanWipe. The Customer Care reply I received was contrary to what has been posted in this and other threads in which CleanWipe was requested.
"Thank you for contacting Symantec Enterprise Customer Care.

Regarding your request, please contact Symantec Enterprise Technical Support at: https://support.broadcom.com between the hours of 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Pacific Standard Time) to obtain download credentials for the Symantec File Share site.

Technicians are available Monday through Friday. Please refer to the case number in the subject line of this email when calling for faster service. My Apologies, Customer Care is not able to provide File Share access."
    Thank you,

hi mdwhome, while waiting for your cleanswip, can you check disk 2 of your SEP installer? I think there's a sep uninstaller there.

@mdwhome: call the TECHNICAL SUPPORT or open a case via web and ask for the latest version of CLEANWIPE. That's all.

(Rob Walker)  what is your case #, assuming you were able to create one (over the web or phone)?  CW is a last resort, and isn't provided until a TSE has an opportunity to diagnose and troubleshoot your problem.

(MDWHome) let me look into your case a bit...I'll be in touch.

    Best,

    @Paul, @hear4u/Eric, @Giuseppe
Thanks for your replies. Here is some history for you.
Just prior to April 1 (the conficker hype) I discovered no clients were receiving current virus definitions from SEPM and Live Update was locked down. There were multiple client versions in the field that were installed using different SEP installation versions, so I decided to start from scratch and upgrade to 11.x. I created the policies to just push out and keep updated the anti-virus and anti-malware definitions and allowed clients to do manual Live Updates, as well as push out the latest client version over a one week period during slow network utilization. The clients are being updated, but report that their anti-virus definitions are out of date. A manual uninstall of the client, deletion of the SEP folder under %programfiles% and the SymentecVolatile registry hive under HKLM\Software, and a manual installation of the new client starts communication back with the SEPM server. No automated process works to my knowledge cleanly, which is why I wanted Cleanwipe.
I can be contacted via email from the case contact, and appreciate any and all assitance you can provide!
    Regards,
    Mike (mdwhome)

Hi mike how are you deploying the client software, in my case I am deploying via altiris. But my old client uses SAV. Deployment was successful, I am just having problems with winXP clients with SP3.

In your case, since you already have SEP on workstations, from scratch. The safest way to would be CleanSwipe then deploy SEP.

Hey Paul, I was trying to deploy the client by policy on the highest hierarchy group in SEPM, but it retains the original client settings and does not pull the updates, or even appear to report back to SEPM. I agree with your assessment that Cleanwipe and a reinstall is the best, but it has been a challenge to get my hands on Cleanwipe.
    Thanks,
    Mike.

As Eric said before it is only suppose to be used as a last resort after an unsuccessul uninstall. If you call in and make a case you should get the link to download cleanwipe, but you have to call in. Sorry if it has been hard obtaining it, but we just can't let have people using cleanwipe everytime they need to do an uninstall. That is why we have them call in and make a case.

That is true but I don't think that you should also restrict the customers from getting the cleanwipe via the mysupport. Rather what you say over here about cleanwipe being the last resort, That should be mentioned in the email when sent with the credentials and in the document that explains on how to use cleanwipe.

Hi Grant, I already have an open case, the case number is above.
Anyway, to make the world a safer place and ease my pain a bit, it would be best imho to be able to fix the broken client centrally. Seems like we are going to go around this for a while for some unfathomable reason.
Let me know, do I open a second case?
    Thanks!
    Mike.

Oh shoot sorry I didn't see that you already had a case open the first time I posted. I am sending an email to our forum admin, Eric since he was the one that was looking into your case orginally. I will see what is the hang up on your case and get back to you as soon as possible. I also urge you not to try to obtain cleanwipe from external sources.

    Cheers,
    Grant-

Thanks everyone who took the time to respond. "Justin" has closed the case above, in agreement with what you have advised, calling in to technical support and opening the case that way.
The heck with it, I'll do it my way, it's just a little less elegant.

You know something. Go for it this way.

Open up a case in MySupport with the issue as "problem in uninstalling a client" and put the severity as per your urgency. The technician will get back to you and this way it wouldnt be the customer care. If they want, they can have a look at the machine too. You wouldnt atleast have to be in the queue and will help the support in giving you the tool which you should have got.

Take the comment about last resort seriously.  I had trouble with an uninstall and asked for CleanWipe on a Terminal Server.  I got it and ran it.  When finished the TS could not find an IP address.  It took me almost 2 hours on another support call to fix that problem.  I will tell you what finally worked.  My NIC had 2 drivers associated with it, one published by HP and one by Symantec.  The Symantec driver was deleted and the NIC was unable to get an IP address.  I went to another server and copied that driver to a flash drive, put it in the TS and loaded it to the proper directory.  I then had to uninstall the NIC.  A few minutes later there was an automatic reinstall and it was back up, but with DHCP rather than a fixed IP.  I had to change the NIC properties back to fixed.  Would I do it again?  No way.  I will work with Symantec support to be sure I do everything right the first time.

    Hi Everyone:

As  a 3rd level tech for 8000 SEP installs, cleanwipe doesn't allways work, that's not to say that it is a faulty tool. It can work without flaws, and other times, just make my day horrible.

Please consider other options like the Graceful add/remove programs... the M/S installer cleanup utility... and Regedit.

Also...Creating your own uninstall passwords and not the Defaults... they are there for a reason to stop threats from stopping the services... change the default password to your own Strong password.

My company is now unfortunately using cleanwipe as a crutch tool, and It makes some of the techs lazy.
Most of them love the hunt of the problem... others just want to make their numbers.... (and that's a corporate problem)

I can fix a bad install sometimes faster then running cleanwipe... and that's a "sometimes"... not ALL THE TIME.

Just wait until you run one and like SearchingPaths above... you get your NIC's  to go "POOF"... teefer is sometimes very unforgiving... and you have no recourse.
... not on line all of the time, but my 2 Cents...

P.S. I get great support from Oregon guys and gals kiss
