What Operating System are you using?

    What PGP version?

It might help to search the disk for errors.

Do you know the sector size of the disk?  Please see http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH173657

It's Mac OS 10.6. 10.2.1. I did search the disk for errors...none found. That link just brings me to the Ednpoint main page. Am I supposed to do something from there? I will say that I've encrypted two other drives that are exactly the same with no issues so I dont think its the sector size issue.

It's interesting that the link is not working for you.  I'm able to access it from computers here.  But, it was only in reference to sector size.  I'm not finding anything relevent to that error message in relation to external disk encryption.

Im pretty sure the disk has either 512k emulation or is 512k. Like I said, Ive had no issues with other disks that are exactly the same as this. Maybe its a bad drive?

Just installed PGP Desktop 10.2.1 MP3 (build 4940) on a Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion). When attempting to perfom whole disk encryption on the Mac's internal hard drive (256GB SSD), and after I enter the passphrase and select continue, it very quickly prompts the following error messag:

An Error Occured While Encrypting Your Disc" PGP Error # -1

    Any suggestions?  Thanks!

@showe - The issue that you are describing is the same behavior that we have observed while testing certain encryption scenarios internally. Are you using Mac OS X 10.7 or 10.8?

I will be investigating and return back to you with information later this week. if you don't hear back from me here, please feel free to click on the link with my name (PGP_Ben) and send me an email.

    Thanks!

Will the next MP bring out support for 10.8?  Got quite a few customers champing at the bit.  I read somewhere Q4 2012, do you have any more accurate dates?

Any update on this? I have a MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.8 and PGP Desktop 10.2.1 and I get the same PGPError #-1 when trying to run whole disk encryption.

I figured this out - if your drive has existing PGPWDE01 and 02 files, it will die with this error when trying to encrypt.  Delete (back them up first) and encrypt as normal.

I also get the PGP Error #-1 and I definitely have no existing PGPWDE01 or 02 files. I am unsing Mac OS 10.8.1 Mountain Lion. Will there be a fix?

Yes, for Mac OSX Mountain Lion the PGP Error # -1 we have released an update to fix this problem. Please visit FileConnect where you can download PGP Desktop 10.2.1 MP4 for Mac. This update introduces Mountain Lion compatability and here are the release notes for your reference:

moving to the correct forum group since this is a PGP Mac issue and it was in the Windows PGP Desktop and Messaging section.

Can anyone update the status of this thread who has tested with 10.2.1 MP4 to see if it helps with your issue. I know that we fixed at least one problem specific to trying to WDE encrypt the boot drive on Mac OS X 10.8 for this problem.

The problem is this -1 error is very generic and we actually have found 3 or 4 uses cases that can cause this error to occur. Most of them involve trying to encrypt or decrypt with multiple partitions or using NTFS formatted external drives.

10.2.1 MP4 successfully resolved the issue I had with full disk encryption on OS X 10.8.

The only remaining issue from my perspective is a delay between the time I power up my machine until I see the PGP prompt asking me for the passphrase (several very long seconds of wait time during which I see a blank screen). Also using PGP on a PC with no delay there.

    Still, MP4 works.

Thanks for that feedback @r4669. We found the same problem in our QA testing and confirmed that the slowness at startup had to do with launchd. Once they updated to 10.8.2 they are no longer seeing the slow startup behavior.

We are still in the process of testing 10.8.2 with our current builds in development today though.  Please follow these two KB's to keep on top of the 10.8.2 compatability as well as other Mac OS X version compatabilities. You can actually subscribe  to the KB article to be emailed when we update the content :)

I'm still seeing the problem here with 10.2.1 MP4 on 10.8.2

The issue seems to occur when 'Power Failure Safety' is selected. In my case the drive identifies as a "Western Digital My Passport 0748" - a 2 TB USB 3.0 external drive.

The drive is now encrypting fine, and I'll just be careful with the machine.

We have a troubleshooting article for when this error is encountered that may be helpful.  We are interested in new scenarios that this behavior shows up in, so please continue to post and offer feedback:

I am also getting PGPError #-1.  I have Mac OS 10.8.2 and PGP Encryption Desktop 10.2.1 MP5.  I have been able to encrypt the drive that holds the operating system, but have been unable to encrypt the second drive that is empty.  This second drive has been previously encrypted but has been unencrypted and erased and repartitioned.  After receiving the message I also reinitialized the drive with Drive Genius 3 and further confirmed that this second drive does not have PGPWDE files on them.  I then tried to instrument the drive with PGPWDE terminal command and get another error:

     > pgpwde --instrument --disk 1

bootinstaller failed (49154): No such file or directory (0:3:2)
    Failed to prepare for encryption
    Operation instrument disk failed:
    Error code 2: PGPClientError #2

It appears that PGP Drive Encryption cannot "instrument" the drive and is producing PGPError #-1.  However I cannot even get PGPWDE terminal command to instrument the drive either.

I have been through TECH198399 doc and have not solved the problem.

    Hi Bamadison,

You will need to contact customer at 800.721.3934. They should be able to help you with finding a copy of your upgrade notification email. I would verify with them, while you have them on the phone, that they have your correct contact information as well.

I hope that helps. Good luck!
