I was trying to manually run a scan but got the following error message:

Could not start scan. Scan engine returned error 0x20000058

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening and how to get the scan working?

    Thanks.
    Hurray

What version Scan engine are you using?

Here is a current KB that shows a solution.

This is an old KB so it may not apply to you but give it a look.

    Hi,
None of the above suggestion fixed the problem. It looks like there is a trojan horse virus on the computer. All this problem started when I was no longer able to open up Internet Explorer8.

The symantec anti-virus I have is of Rev3 version.

Try to download NSS and SCAN..
    ftp://ftp.symantec.com/misc/tools/nss/

How to run the Norton Security Scan on a machine with limited or no internet connectivity.

    1. On a machine with network connection, follow Step 1. and 2. and extract the files to C:\VirusScan\NSS and launch NSS.exe.
The Virus definitions will download to the local machine here: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SymcData\virusdefs-2.5-e\<date.rev>).
    2. In the C:\VirusScan\NSS folder, create a folder called “VirusDef” (example C:\VirusScan\NSS\VirusDef)
    3. Copy all the virus definition folder content from \<date.rev> folder (example:20080725.003) into the VirusDef folder
    4. Copy the entire VirusScan folder to a thumb drive.
    5. Now you can start NSS.exe from the thumb drive. It may complain about definition might not be the latest, but you can skip that message.

I have not checked NSS in safe mode... after doing above procedure try in safe mode.....

Download and run NSS ( norton security scan)  on this computer so map the C:\ drive to some other computer where av is working fine and has updated definitions and scan the Drive from that computer.

    Hi Srinivas and Vikram,
Thank you for your suggestions. I downloaded Norton Security Scan and ran a scan on the computer. It detected one virus called DDoS.Trojan. However it said it was not able to delete it. What can I do to delete this virus from the computer?

And I am wondering if this is not the virus that was causing Symantec Anti Virus to give me an error message and also blocking IE8 from starting.

Check if this document helps you

For deleting this Virus try to run a scan in safe mode with networking.

    Hi Kavin,

I ran Norton Security Scan in safe mode and it still could not repair this DDoS,Trojan virus that it detected.
I have now updated my Symantec Anti virus software, and all its definitions.
However I stopped and restarted my Symantec AntiVirus services under Control Panel>Services, and now I can scan manually. But Symantec AntiVirus did not find the DDos.trojan virus that Norton Security Scan found. Do you know what is going on? And another problem is, after the scan is done, if I try to rescan, it gives me the same error message. So I have to each time stop and restart the service.

    Hi,

I've had one that's been kicking my butt for the past month.  I can run manual scan and tons of files continue to be found with the bloodhound.Exploit.289 and Bloodhound.PDF!gen alerts in the user temp folder.  Now I can do liveupdate, run a manual scan but can't quite seem to catch this little bugger.  It also finds files with trojan.pidief.

At any rate, I can't run the manual scan in Windows 7 safe mode.  It always returns the error code 0x8007043c.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might finally be rid of this mess?  I am indeed running SEP 11.0.6000.550.  Thanks a bunch!

You might try our Norton Power Eraser tool and see if it catches this bug.

    http://security.symantec.com/nbrt/npe.asp?lcid=1033&origin=default

Because the Norton Power Eraser uses aggressive methods to detect these threats, there is a risk that it can select some legitimate programs for removal. You should use this tool very carefully, and only after you have exhausted other options.
