DS 7.1 Client upgrade from 6.5

  • 1.  DS 7.1 Client upgrade from 6.5

    Hello.

    Which would be the best way to upgrade all the clients from 6.5 to the 7.1 client?

    is there a way to script this, or is it a manual thing?

    to move the agent from a old server (altiris 6.5) to the new server (Notification Server 7.1)

     

     in the agent config pages in the Altiris Console 6.5, you can point to the new server and it will move agents across to the new server
    or

    you can run this command on the pc

    aexagentutil /server:newserver.dk

     
    You must activate the taks to upgrade Plugin Solution for agent in both case in the 7,1 console

    and in my opinion is the fastest and easiest way to create agent configurations om the old server, that point to the new sever.
    It should be said that we had problems on a few PC that hate problem with deleting some of the old-soloutions. but we did through a taks

    In short, clients in 6.x are redirected to 7.1 using a targeted agent settings policy that specifies the new servername FQDN and servername web address.  You should test with test boxes, then I'd recommend a very small pilot, followed by a larger pilot, and then a staggered roll to production systems once you have the issues ironed out.

    How does this look as a plan so far.

    If what i put in the first screen wont work, then how about creating a script task on 6.5 and getting the clients to run

    So your screenshots show Deployment Solution plug-ins while this is the Client Management Suite forum.  Do the clients currently run the NS6 agent?  If they do not, but only run the AClient, then you will need to roll out the Symantec Management Agent (equivalent to NS6's Altiris Agent) using one of several methods outlined in the implementation guide.  They are: scripted install using AClient; scripted install using third-party software; Active Directory Group Policy Logonscript; pull install (e-mail URL to users or technicians); push install (select systems with a task or policy and push to one or many systems remotely and silently).

    The AClient can co-exist with the NS7.1 Symantec Management Agent, so you do not need to remove it.  By no means should you redirect the AClient to the NS 7.1 server unless the NS 7.1 server is running Deployment Solution 6.9 SP5.

    FWIW,

    My experience has been mixed with trying to run the agent upgrade policies in NS 7.  If I had to do it again, I would use DS 6.9 to uninstall all the NS 6 agents from the systems and push the agent out with NS 7.  I used DS 6.9 to install the agent to any straglers.  Most of the agents upgraded, but some of the agents did not.  So I had a mix of NS6 and NS7 agents running on the same computer.  I used DS 6.9 to run a job to remove the agents and rebooted before installing with NS7.

    thanks for that, ive been thinking if there is a way to manually remove them via the 6.5 console too.

    Other than that i was going to roll out the 7.1 client and then create a script job to remove the old client.

    im not sure what is the best way just asking some ideas. thanks for your input.

    Here's one method to uninstall the AClient/DAgent:

    If you're talking about removing the NS6 Altiris Agent, then that gets handled by the upgrade process once you move them to NS7.1.  By testing, then piloting, then moving to production, you'll ensure that any issues are discovered prior to a big push, and all NS6 agents will properly upgrade when received by NS7.1.

    I recently moved from 7.0 to 7.1 so this may not apply, but I thought I'd mention it.  I tried simply redirecting the agents to the new NS and letting the upgrade scripts take care of them.  Anything that was x64 ended up with an unusable agent.  I had to go back and clean those off and manually reinstall the agent.

    We ended up just running an AeXAgentUtil.exe /clean, and then installing the 7.1 agent fresh.

    Basically,

    I created a job in DS with the following tasks:

    "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\AeXAgentUtil.exe" /uninstallagents /clean

    rmdir /s /q "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent"

    pretty simple.
