Drivers NOT Working On Ghost Suite

I have Ghost Solution 11.5.1.2266 with Latest Updates

We just upgraded all business laptops to Dell Latitude E7240 Series and I am having a hard time creating an image for these laptops.

I added the Intel Driver in Win-PE (512) as well as the latest Intel Drivers according to https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/downloads/latest-vista-version-drivers-use-gss

All Vista Drivers and the task starts ok, and it goes as far as Step "To Virtual Partition" in which case the laptop reboots and gets stuck in "polling for bound server GHOST" then it finally reboots itself WITHOUT COPYING THE IMAGE!!!

The laptop goes through the whole setup again (as if it is a new image, it even makes changes to which WORKGROUP to join, the name of the PC etc...) but the image was not created and it errors out with this:

    Details for: Run Sysprep

Check client permissions and that %systemdrive%\sysprep\sysprep.exe is present on the client

Failed to run sysprep.exe on client

(the client does get a sysprep folder) and I can ping to the client pc and from the client pc to the server (for some reason though when it is stuck on "polling for bound" i get no IP and can't ping anything so I think it's a NIC issue but at the same time it is able to send the sysprep file

One thing I am confused on though is, at the Properties for the PC/Machine I am trying to capture the image from I do see that it is using the Virtual Partition Pre OS with the WINPE-512 (which has all the drivers I added, new Intel Drivers plus the Latitiude's specific drivers) but just below that "Network Settings when using Virtual Partition" I can see that it it is checked on "Use Manually Selected Template" (because the Use Suggested Template is greyed out) and it is using a Intel Pro 1000 but when I try to browse to see if I can find the Intel Driver I placed in there I get the Driver Template but I do not see the Win-PE-512 with all the drivers, instead I get the list of all the manufacturing companies like Intel 3COM Broadcom etc...

If I try to Edit I get to the Network Interface Card menu that allows me to add DOS network drivers (which I am assuming it uses while Ghost tries to copy the Image) but it asks for Packed Driver or NDIS2 Drivers and I have no idea what that means or where I can even get those types of drivers for the Latitude E7240.

Can someone please explain how to add DOS drivers? Do I need them? Where can I find them?

    Thanks

If you are using WinPE then there is no requirement for DOS drivers. DOS drivers are only required when using DOS as the boot operating system, which these days causes more problems than it solves.

If your DELL machines use the Intel 82579 NIC chipset then search these forums on "82579" for links to known good drivers for WinPE. Not all Vista drivers for this chipset actually work on WinPE, hence the MANY threads on this chipset.

It is not using 82579, I read it Intel Thernet Connection L218-LM

also, I would not choose the DOS drivers except that at the properties of the computer where this appears:

    Virtual Partition PreOS

    -WINPE

    (which is fine)

    * and right underneath that *

Network Settings when using Virtual Partion

    - Use Manually Selected Template

    Intel Pro 1000

-User Suggested Tempalte (*i can't choose this 'cause it's greyed out)

i just tried with WINPE drivers according to Intel and it times out in "Run Sysprep" and i think the problem is that it isn't connecing to the network 'cause once it goes into Ghost, it gets no IP and obviously can't ping anything

i have some machines with the 218 chipset.  I ended up having to download Windows Server 2008 (NOT r2) drivers and using those.  maybe that will help?

I dont think Intel released Vista 32 drivers for these latest set of NICs(I218,I218 ETC).Also ,"Network Settings when using Virtual Partition" only applies when you are using PCDOS.With WINPE the section is not relevant.Below is the link to download DOS(NDIS2) drivers, but I dont think the HDD will get recognized under DOS,

    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=4239&lang=eng&OSVersion=DOS&DownloadType=Drivers

The only option is to build a WINPE 3.0 disk with Win 7 drivers ,to image clients using boot Disk/Ghost Cast Server.

So are you saying there is no Symantec Ghost support for newer hardware? :S All new hardware that is coming out is SSD and newer NIC drivers

that chipset L218 does not have Windows Server 2008 drivers - when i go to Dell's web site I only get Win 8 and Win 7 drivers, where did you get those drivers?

Its not about Symantec Ghost(the imaging tool),its the version of WINPE which is used. The WINPE 2.0 ,which is part of GSS 2.5.1 is based on Vista Kernel and its 32 bit.Intel did not release Vista drivers for these new set of NICs(Not sure why ,when XP drivers are still available. Is Vist Obsolete?).So its high time the WINPE version is updated.I believe the next Ghost version will have either WINPE 3.0(Win 7) or WINPE 4.0(Win 8) as part of it.

airg, i wrote some articles on making a PE that uses a newer version and forcing GSS to use it.  its not perfect, and has some annoying issues, but it is better than nothing.  We have HP 800 G1s, and the NIC has the same issue (no VISTA drivers, Win7 or Win8 only).  Here are the links:

thanks for your help though- i think i'm going with Clonezilla :D

The Ghost development team was disbanded several years ago, and while there have been promises of an imminent release of Ghost 3 for a couple of years, there is very little evidence of any actual development going on. Treat it as vapourware unless there is an actual product announcement but do not hold your breath.

thanks to EVERYONE!!! i'm going with Clonezila, which is not an imaging tool but rather a HDD replicator but it will do the work without alll the headaches of drivers with Ghost and I can image m Linux and OSX boxes too

All the best !!! Anyway regarding Ghost 3.0 ,there was a patch update released to support UEFI,recently.Ghost is the default imaging tool under Altiris. So its not dead, totally.
