The requirements and compatibiltiy guide for version 10.5 lists 2 x 3.0 GHz Dual core cpus as a requirement for Network Monitor under the large/very large enterprise hardware section. When run in a virtualized environment can these machines be allocated 2 vCPUs or will 4 be required?

Neither...if you read further along in that guide, you'll notice that Network Monitor is not supported on VM at all.

ok. what about enforce or network protect?

Symantec supports running the following server components on VMware ESX

version 3.5 virtual machines instead of dedicated server hardware:

    Enforce Server

    Network Discover

    Network Protect

    Network Prevent Server (Email)

    Network Prevent Server (Web)

Sorry, thought you were being specific to Network Monitor, not all types of DLP servers.

I interpret that requirement as the number of cores total that the server requires, hence where the LE/VLE requirement is 2xDual Core CPU (4 cores) for a physical server, then the corresponding VM requirements would also be 4 cores.
