  • 1.  Configuring DHCP and PXE in the same box

    Posted Dec 17, 2013 08:41 PM

    Hi guys,

New here, hope you guys can help me.

Could anyone please guide me in configuring the PXE server on a DHCP box?

I looked up a bit but there is not a consensus on what are the scope options to configure so everything can work fine.

Is there a documentation listing what is needed to be done?

I found out that the options below need to be configured on DHCP:

    060 Class Identifier = PXEClient

066 Boot Server Host Name = Enter Your Server IP Address

    067 Bootfile Name =  BStrap\X86pc\BStrap.0

And this setting works on a scenario that I have PXE and DHCP on different boxes.

I learned that maybe setting option 43 can resolve this for me. Is that right? What is the exact value that needs to be set?

    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Regards.

If you have your PXE on one box and DHCP on another I believe you need to configure only Option 66 and Option 67. Often only Option 66 is needed.

If your PXE and DHCP are on the same box all three are needed as you have described in your post.

Unsure in what case you'll need to configure Option 43...

Also check Firewall on your servers - TFTP might be blocked

    Hi Klim!

    Thanks for your response.

Is there a documentation of a best practice? I'm not having trouble right now, but I will be required to configure more than 25 servers (each for a location/vlan) in a future moment, with this type of environment.

We got no internal firewall blocking.

I guess I'll just have to push it and see what happens.

In a vLan scenario you will have PXE and DHCP hopefully on different machines.

So you configure Options 66 and 67 on your DHCP servers.

You then must configure DHCP helpers on your switches to point to your PXE server as well.

I used (and still use) "PXE Modes Operation" white paper from the old Altiris times (link below).
