Officially it is not supported, however you can test on the Windows 8 machine.

    check this link

Symantec usually takes 30 day from the release date to start supporting the OS. I see from the doc that no date has yet been confirmed.

Good to know that the defs are updated.

check out the link shared earlier, ADC policy has some issue

Please note that there are currently known issues with SEP's optional Application and Device Control (ADC) component on this new Windows 8 platform.  It is recommended to install SEP 12.1 without ADC when performing trials with Windows 8. These conflicts are expected to be resolved prior to the release of a version of SEP 12.1 that is supported on Windows 8.

To voice support for early compatibility with this new OS, please cast a vote for the relevant Idea (enhancement request) in Symantec's Connect Forums

Getting a BSOD upon reboot after installing SEP 12.1 RU1 (64-bit) on Windows 8 Consumer Preview

    KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Only way out is system restore.

My VPN software (juniper) requires SEP installed, so I'm boxed out for now.

    Any thoughts?

does the memory dump shows the SEP causing the BSOD?

Hi Pete - thanks for checking in.

    Yes - error is:

    Fault bucket 0x1E_c0000005_Teefer+1b42, type 0

    Event Name: BlueScreen

However, I want to catch you up on a few actions:

    a. Initally, I could not recover from BSOD, and had to do a system restore

    b. I went back to a state pre- SEP, and noticed that there were a lot of pending updates from Microsoft

    c. After downloading updates, I tried re-installing SEP

    d. Installation, and Updates fine, then BSOD after required reboot. (Sames as above)

    e. However, on next reboot - the system booted to Windows 8

The system is now running and apparantly stable, but SEP reports that the "Firewall is malfuctioning" in SMC.

Mouse over on SEP notification bar says "Firewall driver is not loaded".

    Thanks for any help.

Go back to pre-SEP state, and try to install SEP without Network Threat Protection module, as Teefer seems to be the cause of the problem.

SEP 12.1 may work on Windows 8, however current release are not supported on such system as proper QA process has not been followed on Symantec side. However, you may of course try it for your own entertainment  :)

I *think* I may have tried this.  I selected "Advanced" option during  installation of 64bit client, and selected basic antivirus and antispyware only  (also unselected email scanning)

Failure mode is different now:  No BSOD, but SMC will not start.  Says " Symantec Services are not running"

I try to manually start and stop services but no luck.

By the way, there is an interesting White Paper from Symantec about Windows 8 Security:

At present, a SEP 12.1 offers support for computers running Windows 7, Windows 2008, WES7 and other Operating Systems. For full details, please see System Requirements for Symantec Endpoint Protection, Enterprise and Small Business Editions, and Network Access Control 12.1.

As of this writing, Windows 8 has not been officially released by Microsoft.  Comprehensive quality assurance tests of SEP 12.1 have not been run on this forthcoming platform, and so SEP 12.1 is currently neither certified nor supported on Windows 8 and any of its beta releases.

Administrators who wish to test their organization's SEP 12.1 endpoints on Windows 8 are welcome to do so, though Symantec Technical Support can only offer assistance on supported platforms.
