  • 1.  Can *.tmp and *.vdb files be deleted?

    Posted Sep 02, 2009 09:18 AM
    Hello,

We are using SAV 10.1.4.4000 on a Windows SBS2000 server.  In the C\Program Files\SAV folder we have numerous *.tmp files (VD2AEC03, VD2AEF204, etc) and .vdb files.  These are big files and we need the room on our C: drive.

Can we safely remove these files to free up disk space?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Tony

yes the files can be deleted.

Growing .vdb and .tmp means that there could be  a possibilty that the virus defntion could have corrupted.

in order to delte the files you have to  stop Symantec AntiVirus service . and  delete the content of

    1. Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs

    2.  delete from <\Program Files\SAV   all the files with extension *.tmp, *.vdb, *.xdb, *.wdb

    3.  delete the content of \Program Files\SAV \I2_LDVP.VDB\

    4. delete the content of \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application data\Symantec\LiveUpdate\Downloads

    5. start Symantec AntiVirus service

    Go to http://www.symantec.com/business/security_response/definitions/download/detail.jsp?gid=savce

and download  Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition Client installations on Windows platforms (32-bit)  20090901-006-i32.exe

    Hello Rafeeq.

That was certainly a help.  Thank you.

I was able to delete the folders in the I2_LDVP.VDB folders and gave us a lot of space back, however I did not see any information about the *.tmp files.  These files take up the most space.

    Thanks,
    Tony

AS mentioned earlier ,you can delte the temp fies also without any issues.

when the defs are first loaded, these are extracted to a temp directory based on the signature type
suppose to get purged but most of the time they remain :(
i have checked other posts too.. in this post IVang has suggested to clear out the corrupted defs by deleting the temp directory..( making sure that i give you the right sugestion :) )

    Check Ivan suggestion ,

    4. Remove the contents of C:\Program Files\SAV\I2_LDVP.VDB (or SYS\SAV\I2_LDVP.VDB on Netware). If there is an I2_LDVP.

TMP folder here, delete the entire .TMP folder as well as the contents of I2_LDVP.VDB

You can delete them no problem :)
