  • 1.  Alleged "Pending System Changes Require Reboot" Errors for EndPoint Installer

    Posted Nov 26, 2009 01:08 PM
I am currently testing a new Windows 7 Professional O/S Dell Dimesion tower workstation and was attempting to install the Symantec EndPoint Protection client on the workstation and constantly receive the following error message:  "Symantec Endpoint Protection has detected that there are pending system changes that require a reboot.  Please reboot the system and rerun the installation."

The system has been rebooted and even shut down numerous times and I still receive this error message.  No new applications have been installed recently on the workstation to warrent a reboot.  Any ideas as to  the cause of this error?

I have installed this on another Windows 7 Dell laptop without any problems.

     Open registry and go to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\
hight light Session Manager on the right hand side delete the value
    PendingFileRenameOperations

Also delete the same value from
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations

then run the install...without rebooting the PC

I'm having same issue installing SEP using Windows Vista home premium 32 bit OS on an Acer Aspire laptop model 4730Z.
    I keep getting error message:
"Symantec Endpoint Protection has detected pending system changes that require a reboot.  Please reboot the system and rerun the installation."

I opened registry and went to,
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\
I hight lighted Session Manager and deleted the "PendingFileRenameOperations" key on the right hand side.

I do not see this same key in,
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations

The installation gets through  the install shield wizard and then the blue status bar runs backwards and I get this message,
"The wizard was interrrupted before Symantec Endpoint Protection could be comeletetly installed. Your system has not been modified. To complete installation at another time please run setup again."

I have installed this on an XP machine without any problems.
Any ideas as to  the cause of this error?

    Hi Jimkas,
I don't know if you are seeing this issue on the install of the Client or on the SEPM. So I will post the solution to both.

    Client:
Please check out this guide (Error: "The wizard was interrupted...") http://service1.symantec.com/support/ent-security.nsf/854fa02b4f5013678825731a007d06af/e9e38af11fcaf0bd88257392006034ad?OpenDocument

    Solution:
To resolve this issue, the partial installation must be removed by following the steps below:
    1. Launch the Windows Control Panel >Add or Remove Programs and Un-install "LiveUpdate".
    2. Delete "LiveUpdate" folders:
      • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate
      • C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate
    3. Once the above steps have been completed, restart the machine and begin the installation wizard again.

    SEPM:
Please check out this guide (Unable to install the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager "The wizard was interrupted...") http://service1.symantec.com/support/ent-security.nsf/854fa02b4f5013678825731a007d06af/41eb005026d8e7298825747f0078768a?OpenDocument

    Solution:
Re-register "oleaut32.dll" using the following steps.
    1. Click Start> Run
    2. Type regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
    3. Install the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager again.

If the installation log references an error with LiveUpdate, the installation must be removed by following the steps below:
    1. Launch the Windows Control Panel >Add or Remove Programs and Un-install "LiveUpdate".
    2. Delete "LiveUpdate" folders:
      • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate
      • C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate
    3. Once the above steps have been completed, restart the machine and begin the installation wizard again.

    Hope this helps
    Grant
