Windows 10 Upgrade: What This Means for Your Endpoint Security

Jul 22, 2015 11:25 AM

On July 29th, Microsoft will be releasing their next major operating system, Windows 10. Unlike previous OS upgrades, this version does not require users to purchase the new OS. The existing Windows 7 and 8 end users might initiate an upgrade directly on their computers, making it more difficult for IT Administrators to enforce version control.

At Symantec, we are committed to ensuring our customers: Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1, Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition (hosted version) and Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition (on-prem), remain fully protected across all operating systems.

For Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1, a maintenance patch release will be available on July 29, 2015. Customers will need to be current on maintenance to receive the maintenance patch update. For more information, visit our SEP 12.1 Windows 10 Knowledge Base.

Customers using Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition (hosted version) will experience an automatic system update on computers via Live Update targeted for July 29th. From July 29th onwards, any new endpoint installs of the hosted version of Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition will automatically have their machines protected should they wish to upgrade to Windows 10. Similarly, from July 29th onwards, any existing Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition customers will receive targeted patch updates to protect their machines on the new Windows 10 platform. These patch updates will automatically be rolled out later via Live Update to all endpoints, whether they are moving to Windows 10 now or at some point in the future.  This effectively allows IT  Administrators to proactively protect endpoints that move to Windows 10 at a later date. Existing customers must be on a current subscription to take advantage of these patch updates. Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition will automatically notify IT Administrators if any users decide to upgrade to Windows 10 without informing IT. In these instances, a new patch for Windows 10 will be pushed out to protect these user’s machines within a 1-2 hour window.  Symantec will also provide guidance for IT Administrators who wish to avoid this 1-2 hour window and push out the patch update immediately – this guidance can be found on Symantec Knowledge Base.

Customers currently running Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition 12.1 (on-prem), which has now reached End-of-Life, will need to migrate to  the hosted edition in order to receive protection for Windows 10 systems. For information on our automated migration process, visit: go.symantec.com/sbemigration

Why can't Symantec ever speak the same language as their software? PLEASE give us version numbers.
Your MP1 and MP1a are worthless if we go in and look at the console. Even when expanding properties of a computer in the console, it says "client software version: 12.1.6168.6000"  nowhere in your console does it give MP versions.
So please, don't force us to call support or post a forum message asking-  if MP1 is the same as 12.1.6168.6000 TELL US please.

Now I have to contact someone as a search of SIX of your supposed support documents says only MP version, no REAL version number.
Or else change the darned console to give MP versions and stop with the long form detailed version in the display.
One or the other, please decide!

at our company we feel ending support for on premise small business edition is a horrible decision.   You are telling us we can either upgrade to cloud for free, which will not work for us since many of our systems do not have internet access, and it also means all systems access the web to get updates instead of utilizing the internal network to pull them from the centuralized server.

You gave us another option, we could upgrade to enterprise edition, and pay you more money losing the remaining 1.5 years of support under our contract with you.

Symantec this is unacceptable.  We will be looking for other vedors to provide our antivirus and for as long as i am the network engineer at my company we will not purchase another symantec product.

Thanks - I will try that.

I would contact them then. Surely there has to be support for upgrades.

I would like to locate the patch so I'll be able to install Windows 10 as it notified me it is not compatible with WEP - any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I am trying to locate this maintenance patch for SEP 12.1 on Windows 10 that was to be released today.  The link to the KB article in the third paragraph does not have any links and has not been updated in the last week.  I've logged into the licensing portal as well but can't locate any patches/updates.  We are current on maintenance.

Will the patch be for Win10 clients only or the entire SEPM?

Is this for 12.1 RU6 which is the only compatible version with Windows 10. Are lower versions applicable to the same?

I"m not an expert on this subject but build 10240 of Win 10 is a candiadate for RTM I've read, so perhaps the code base is now compatible.  If you were to reinstall SEP, then try the above stuff maybe things would go better than youre testing using previous builds.  Hopefully at least.

The patch that will be released for Endpoint Protection 12.1.X 1-2 hours after the release of Windows 10 will be compatable with both versions of Windows (7 and 10) and Windows will not force it to be uninstalled before updating correct? The Windows 10 technical preview has forced us to uninstall Symantec stating it was not compatible with Windows 10, before it would continue to install.

It's a good news. Thanks
