We are pleased to announce the Symantec Power Eraser!

Jun 25, 2010 05:10 PM

It is my pleasure to announce the latest release of the SEP Supportability Automation Tool v1.0.3050 with a new feature Symantec Power Eraser (SPE).  I’m proud of the Supportability Automation Team accomplishment. We expect SPE to be very beneficial to customers and Support in troubleshooting threats.

The core technology for SPE was developed by Symantec Maximum Repair Team which is part of Security Technology and Response (STAR).  The Consumer team has also used this technology to release a similar tool called Norton Power Eraser (NPE). With this release this technology is now available to both Consumer and Enterprise customers.

Where can I find more information?

This feature is available currently. All that is needed is to export the an SPE file from the report.  Please watch the video......

If you let us know which items you feel are a fp and we have the report we can submit.  Send me a PM.

I admit. I would also like to suggest this for the sake of betterment of this tool. Subject to user acceptance, if you could have a feature of sending details to Symantec the PE team can collate and analyse the data. That way the false positives can significantly reduced at an accelerated pace. I admit to enable 'sending diagnostic reports' involves your legal team into discussion too because user data privacy and confidentiality is involved. Just thought I would share out my view.

Because the technology just became available it takes time to work into the scope of future projects. We are delivering it through the Support Tool so customers can use the technology now.  The technology is aggressive scanning with tendency to false positive so results should be reviewed prior to removal of items. This lends itself to less script use and more one off use.

I'd recommend watching the video for further information.

Hope that helps,

Eric

>>(see note re:caution referring to the tool as 'aggressive' and therefore prone to 'false positives').

I did observe it. It literally behaved now as if it was angry on my system because I have the bad habit of procrastinating updates (both AV and Windows). After seeing its fury, I have started the LiveUpdate and Windows Update is also downloading a lot of them. :)

I don't believe it is intended to be installed.  Rather, it is a standalone tool (see note re:caution referring to the tool as 'aggressive' and therefore prone to 'false positives').

I think the tool is intended to run each time right? Can this be made like an installer and made to piggyback on the client program. That way from a single interface we can manage the threats right?
