Symantec Encryption Product Updates

Jul 19, 2011 04:30 PM

As you might have seen or heard, Symantec recently announced new features to our encryption products.   I’ll give you a quick run down of some of the highlights of this latest release.

One of the most exciting features is the introduction of Symantec PGP Viewer for iOS.  This has been one of the most asked for feature by customers who need a solution to  “My CxO wants to be able to read encrypted emails on their iPad or iPhone.”  Well, it can now be done with the PGP Viewer for iOS.  You can decrypt your emails locally on your iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch devices now.  Best of all, the PGP Viewer is free from the Apple App Store (expected to be in the App Store by late summer.) It does require PGP Universal Server for key management, so wait until you get information from your mail administrator before you install it.

Another really cool feature is the ability of Symantec Endpoint Encryption Full Disk Edition (SEE FDE) to manage Opal-compliant drives.  For those of you who don’t know what Opal drives are, they are essentially hardware-based encrypted disk drives or better known as Self Encrypting Drives (SEDs).  The beauty of Opal drives is the encryption performance, which operates at the full speed of the bus.  These drives have excellent performance because encryption is done in the drive instead of the CPU.  However, keep in mind that you still need software to handle the enterprise services associated with a manged environment.  This is where SEE FDE comes in.  SEE FDE will not only allow you to continue managing your already deployed software encrypted endpoints with software-based encryption, but SEE FDE will also manage policies, reporting, and recovery tokens for SEDs.

As we’ve recently passed the 1-year anniversary of the official acquisition of PGP and GuardianEdge by Symantec, we have also been very busy integrating encryption into different products.  There is a lot of exciting integration with Symantec DLP and PGP encryption.  We’re now taking the next step with the introduction of integration between PGP Universal Server and Symantec Protection Center 2.0 (SPC).  This allows you to have a centralized security management console which enables enterprises to identify emerging threats, prioritize tasks, and accelerate time to protection based on relevant, actionable intelligence.  The integration allows for single sign-on from SPC to the PGP Universal Server.  Here you can look at the status of the Universal Server and reports of your Whole Disk Environment.  As a bonus, SPC is available for free.

These are just some of the new features from this release.  There are of course many more new things that are part of this release as well, and we’ll provide additional coverage in future posts.

Hi Sam,

As far as I know, Virtual Disks will continue to be supported by Symantec.  I have not heard otherwise.  (Do you know something I don't?!)

I too use this feature quite a lot on my Mac.

Regards,

Will Symantec continue to support creating encrypted virtual disks (not WDE) on Mac's?

That is one feature of PGP I use a lot.  (I know I can create an encrypted dmg file with Disk Utility, but I've gotten used to using PGP).

Thanks.
