How quickly can your password be cracked?

Jun 19, 2010 06:00 AM

Sometimes I wonder about the password managed on our internet sites, the other question is how they are safe these passwords?  The answer could be in the article "How quickly can your password be cracked? " by Mike Halsey. There is a good answer about how long it would take an average PC to crack different types and lengths of password.

Follows the chart with password lenght and the estimanted time  :

The main concept explained in the article is " The easiest passwords to crack are those that are simple words.  If your password is your date of birth, dog’s name, child or favourite place then I’d suggest changing them for a stronger password today."

Riva,

It is strongly recommended we always need to use unique strong passwords for each applications. I have come across a tool called http://keepass.info/ which is an opensource password manager. I haven't used it personally though.  I just thought if I would ask here to see if Symantec has a review on the tool and/or similar ones.
