Can ServiceDesk 7.1 and the Symantec Management Platform 7.1 be installed on the same machine?

Mar 17, 2011 03:34 PM

As per Product Management, installation of the Symantec Management Platform 7.1 and ServiceDesk  7.1 7.1 on the same machine are NOT supported. While these do support the same operating system, it has been shown that there are issues with these two products coexisting on the same machine.

However, the configuration of that Workflow Server is not a fully fledged one (Process Manager is missing, for example) and you shouldn't try and use it as one. The Workflow Server on SMP itself is meant primarily for SMP's own use.

The same applies to Workflow

Uhm ... are you aware, that SIM is installing a workflow server when you install CMS?

I did post the same comment to another thread but I'll put it here as well to try and clarify this.

SMP 7.1 and SD 7.1 on one server is not supported.

This has been confirmed by ServiceDesk product management. Updating documentation to state this clearly is in progress.

You can technically still install SMP 7.1 and ServiceDesk 7.1 on the same server at this point but you are likely to run into some app pool/website configuration issues that Support will not help you with. Plus you'd need some real hardware even for just testing.

It is very likely that this will not be allowed in the next/future version of ServiceDesk. The same applies to Workflow.

While I really don't like this KB article due to its detailed content (or lack thereof), it is still valid:

I tried to install SD and NS in the same server, everything works except that I have encountered problems in publishing workflow. and when I eject ServiceDesk in another server, everything works.

Don't do it.

They wont support you if you have ANY other database on the same instance as ServiceDesk.  Save yourself grief later and dedicate hardware to it, as you are going to need all the power you can get when you start growing.

First of April is tomorrow, isn't it?

Is this really happening?

This is not supported.

Mistral,

ServiceDesk has its own Implementation Guide. Here is a link:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=DOC3524

Though it is indeed referred to in the ITMS Implementation Guide (mainly referring to features), it is assumed to be installed on a separate server. Indeed, this is the first version where ServiceDesk and the SMP actually support the same operating system. Still, it would be best if this assumption was explicitly stated in the ITMS Implementation Guide. Page 42 of the SD Implementation Guide specifies "Install the ServiceDesk application software on the ServiceDesk server computer" , implying this is a separate machine (more clear in the text; the previous item spefified installing the solution portion on the SMP server). But it is indeed ambiguous from reading about it in the ITMS guide. I will note this and pass this along; clarifying these things can prevent potentialy problematic implementations. Thank you for pointing this out.

Thank you,

Randall Newnham

If it is not recommended, please update the implementation guide.

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=DOC3464&key=55274&actp=LIST

Starting with page 123.

There the requirements are listed for SQL, NS (ITMS including SD - thought it was renamed to SMP), Task Servers and Package Server.

There are not seperate requirements for SD ... it is not even mentioned.

This the what I was looking for...  Thank you,
