Always under the impression that allowing AutoProtect to scan over the network was a horrible idea.  Could someone comment on the both the pros and cons of enabling this?  Thanks.

No it's not. The link goes to a page entitled "Firewall and Internet security for updates and network access" that isn't about file exclusions it's about firewall exceptions.
