Get Bonus Points: Intel and Symantec Solution Implementations

Nov 08, 2010 11:21 AM

Double Your Rewards On Your Next Article Posting

Looking for some extra points on Symantec Connect?   Here is how you could get bonus points.

Post a valid article, video, or downloadable content showing how you have integrated Intel vPro or Intel Anti-Theft technology into your daily operations.   I am willing to match the number of points you earn, and have already discussed with the Symantec Connect administrators to ensure this can be done.

Point values on Symantec Connect are redeemable for a variety of gift certificates with an average exchange of $15 for every 100 points.   I am willing to give away up to 1,000 points for the first 10 solution postings showing how Intel vPro or Intel Anti-Theft technology benefited you or your customer’s environment.   (Yes – you read that correctly.   I’m willing to give away a total of $150 worth of my own Symantec Connect points for you to post qualifying solutions)

Even better – I will not be limiting to one bonus per person.   If you have more than one solution story to share, please do.   The same quality checks will apply as noted below.

How to Qualify for the Bonus Points

If you have a compelling story to tell and are willing to share with others in the community, post a summary of the solution on Symantec Connect.  Once posted, add a comment to this article with the link and brief summary.

The solution must include a direct reference to how Symantec solutions with Intel vPro or Intel Anti-Theft technology were applied to solve a particular business problem.   Only new solutions will qualify in case you were planning to reuse something already posted during the past 4 years.

In addition, two or more of the following must be included:

  • Use of Symantec Workflow solution to automate the process
  • A brief before\after analysis indicating benefits to the customer\company environment.   (Note: Specific customer\company name is not required in the posting, thus protecting their privacy.)
  • Other Symantec products involved in the solution outside of Symantec Management Platform
  • Inclusion of products or solutions outside of the Symantec portfolio showing interoperability (Hint: Symantec does not need to own the configuration of Intel vPro Technology in order to utilize it)

What is the Process?

The process is simple.

  1. You post an article, video, or downloadable content (i.e. PDF case study posted by you or your company) summarizing the solution with at least four of the points noted above ( 2 required, 2 or more optional)
  2. You get credited up to 100 points by the Symantec Connect administrators per their rewards schedule.
  3. Add a comment to this article with a link to your solution post and a brief summary.   Two sentences will suffice.
  4. Send a note to me (Terry Cutler) via Symantec Connect messaging.
  5. A phone call will be scheduled to verbally discuss the posted solution.
  6. I will validate the solution with you by asking a few clarifying questions ensuring the above criteria were met.
  7. I will contact the Symantec Connect administrators to transfer the same amount of points you received in step 2 from my account to yours.  (“Bonus Points”)
  8. You now have double the points for a Symantec Connect posting which can be redeemed via Symantec Connect rewards site.

Why I am offering my own points

Why am I making this offer?  Simple – as a Trusted Advisor on the Symantec Connect community, I want the community to hear more from others on how these technologies are benefiting them or their customers.  This is an experiment on my part to help get more solutions posted, encourage collaboration, and so forth.

In essence, this offer and experiment provides goodness to all for a variety of reasons.   Here are just a few key reasons:

  • You get a chance to tell your story.
  • Beyond the small incentive of double points, you get a chance to show your expertise to others.
  • Symantec Connect community gets a chance to compare notes, collaborate, and so forth.

Symantec solutions with Intel vPro Technology have existed for 4 years now, and customers are benefiting from the solution.   In recent months I have heard about some great success stories, discussed some intriguing solution ideas, and had a chance to present upcoming solutions to Symantec sales engineers.   (Hint for the rest of the community – Intel vPro Technology solutions relating to Symantec Endpoint Protection are coming, the Intel vPro Technology configuration process is being improved, and more joint solution ideas are either in development or under consideration)

In the end – I find it is more relevant if others tell their success stories and associated key learnings.   To help ensure credit is correctly given and more collaboration occurs, I am inviting others to share their stories with a small incentive on my part.

On the Intel Anti-Theft Technology, I will admit that the solution is relatively new in the Symantec solution space.   Intel was working with PGP prior to the Symantec acquisition, and the solution was first announced and demonstrated at Symantec Vision Barcelona (For more information see http://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/intel-anti-theft-technology-and-pgp-announced-vision-barcelon).    The intriguing part is that a few Symantec sales engineers and partners immediately grabbed onto to the solution concept and started contemplating ideas how to apply within their customer environments.   Again – my desire is for others to tell their story within the Symantec Connect community.

A few inspirational ideas to consider

The following are a few concepts discussed with a variety of contacts to give a hint at interesting topics:

  • Self-Help Portal – Imagine if the end-user could initiate an event, such as powering on their Intel vPro Technology enabled system, via a handheld device or portal-based winform.    Imagine if the user could flag a computer as stolen which would invoke the PGP and Intel Anti-Theft process while also spawning a system rebuild for the user.   A related idea is enabling a user to initiate an automated system rebuild or migration process.
  • Scheduled Wake-Up: Although the Symantec Management Platform supports power-on commands for several systems, the actual communications are unicast and may raise the latency of the power-on event if multiple systems are targeted.   A feature exists within newer generations of Intel vPro Technology called PC Alarm Clock to provide an OEM agnostic mechanism of scheduling a defined wake-up time in the firmware.   The posted solution would identify how to apply the Symantec Management Platform with enabling scripts to utilize this technological feature.
  • Automated response to security alerts: With a solution like Symantec Protection Center, automate the response by securely powering on a remote client, applying a custom network filter, running a remediation task, and if needed - opening a remote control session to the client.   The non-automated version of these remote remediation steps was shown a year ago with a revised demonstration early this year.  (if curious how this was done – please ask)

A number of resources are available online.   The following are just a few:

Concluding Thoughts

I anxiously anticipate creative ideas and customer facing solutions from the community.   Even better, I look forward to hearing about customer implementations.   Intriguing ideas have been discussed for retail point-of-sale units, healthcare applications, automating deployment processes, education environments, and many more.   Instead of taking credit for your solution, I am inviting you to share your story… and get some bonus points in the process.
