Difference between a managed SEP Client and an Unmanaged SEP Client.

Aug 15, 2011 12:41 PM

Many a times we come across instances where the customer have many questions regarding a Managed SEP Client and an Unmanaged SEP Client.

  • What is the difference between a managed SEP Client and an Unmanaged SEP Client?
  • Are there any differences in the features?
  • How to find if the client is managed or unmanaged?

Here I have answers to all the questions.

Difference between a managed SEP Client and an Unmanaged SEP Client.

Managed Client

Unmanaged Client

A managed client communicates with a management server in our network. The administrator configures the protection and the default settings, and the management server downloads the settings to the client. If the administrator makes a change to the protection.

An unmanaged client does not communicate with a management server and an administrator does not manage the client.

The user doesn’t have the right required to configure the client. All the settings are locked or unavailable, but we can view information about what  the client does on your computer.

The user has all the right to configure the client. All the settings are available for him to configure

The administrator manages the client, but we can change some

client settings and perform some tasks. For example, we may be able to run your own scans and manually retrieve client updates and protection updates.

All administrative tasks can be run by the client

The administrator manages the client, but we can change all the client settings and perform all the protection tasks.

It is self-managed client

Differences between a managed client and an unmanaged client on the basis of features:

Now how to check if the client is managed or unmanaged

To check whether the client is managed or unmanaged

1 On the Status page, click Help > Troubleshooting.

2 In the Troubleshooting dialog box, click Management.

3 In the Management panel, under General Information, next to Server, look for the following information:

■If the client is managed, the Server field displays either the management

server's address or the text Offline.

The address can be an IP address, DNS name, or NetBIOS name. For example, a DNS name might be SEPMServer1. If the client is managed but not currently connected to a management server, this field is Offline.

■If the client is unmanaged, the Server field is Self-managed.

4 Click Close.

You need to install a SEP client on the SEPM as well. SEPM is only for centrally managing clients. It does not provide the actual protection.

Hi Everyone,

I know, this is not a right place to ask this question. Please...

I am new to Symantec Endpoint Protection and want to install on Windows Server 2012 R2.

Shall I install SEPM as well as client installation on Server or SEPM 14 is enough?

Please advise me... to proceed further

Thank you,

Regards,

Jose

in terms of unmanaged client: you mentioned "

The client does not display either

a locked padlock or an unlocked

padlock. "

But it is not true. when admin create a package for "unmanaged" client, we can still assign some policies based on certain group to this package, and this client is also unmanaged.

Please edit your original article to keep all the information together. That will help others who then don't need to read the chain of comments to find the extras.

Together with this info, LiveUpdate can be controlled centrally for managed clients. For unmanaged, every workstation needs to be individually updated when a change is required.

The unmanged client can get the Liveupdate from internet and LUA.

The manged client can get it from SEPM. GUP ,internet and LUA.

It would be useful to add something about how definition updates are delivered. As far as I know, unmanaged clients only get their updates via LiveUpdate whereas a managed client can get them from the SEPM server (either pushed or pulled, depending on a setting) as well.
