Creating an Offline Installation of Notification Server 7/CMS 7

Oct 27, 2008 03:47 PM

A previous article on the Juice, A Preview of Things to Come: NS7 - Altiris Installation Manager, describes the then named Altiris Installation Manager. Since that article has been published, the installer has been renamed to the Symantec Installation Manager (SIM).

The Symantec Installation Manager will be the way to install Notification Server 7 and the rest of the Solutions (CMS, SMS, etc). As mentioned in the article, SIM downloads from the internet the solutions and installs them. A comment in the article asked how will one deal with an offline install of NS?

The solution is to create an offline installer and this article will guide you through it.

NOTE: The purpose of this article is to give a sneak peak. UI elements, help or label text, may be changed in the interim between now and the release. This article provides no guarantees or promises and what will be delivered in the final release.

In order to create this package, SIM must be installed first. A quick note about the installation is the location you install SIM into is the location NS7 and all files will be downloaded to, verify there is enough disk space on the drive you will be installing before moving forward.

Once the Symantec Installation Manger is installed, launch if from the Start Menu, currently located at Start -> All Programs -> Altiris -> Symantec Installation Manager -> Symantec Installation Manager. From the Manager, pictured before, click on "Create Install Package"

From the Select Product Page, select the Suites or Products you would like to install. In this exam we will be installing Client Management Suite. Select Client Management Suite, and provide the output location of the package. In this exam we will save it on the desktop.

Review the selected, hit next and accept the EULA (End User License Agreement)

The files will be verified and then contact information needs to be provided. (This needs to be provided to verify for export compliance for some software.)

Once you have applied any licenses, begin the build of the installation package.

After the installation package has been built, copy it to the server you would like to install Notification Server 7 on. Double click on the zip file and extract the programs to a specific location.

Once the files are extracted the Symantec Installation Manager will launch.

Once the installation is complete you will be prompted for credentials and also location of SQL. You now have an offline installation of NS7/CMS7.

I must say it seems if we install the SIM on a D drive, locate %temp% (or %tmp%) on D drive (or any other), you can run with a C drive under 5GB !  (Should be verified :)

Yes, all the same you ask for "unzip" on D or another Drive, all the 1.33GB content will replicate C drive "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Symantec Installation Manager\Installs\Altiris".
Why such a mass on the C drive :-( [because most people never installing application on C...]
So you create an install package, run & unzip a selected not C drive, but:
So that's why you should not try to install without 5+1.4 GB free en C...
Or you will have to:
  • delete the above folder 1.33GB content,
  • pass the checkup asking 5GB you were not having any more because of the 1.33 GB MSI copy above... :-(
  • stop on MSI access error, do not cancel, do not OK...
  • copy again the 1.33GB on your C drive path above, (yep only 4GB free now, but you will pass... )
  • Confirm overwrite the empty 0 kb MSI with the full one ...
  • clic OK previous error message to try again
  • finish the setup & migration wizard... ouf.
And if you are upgrading from NS6, do not delete the 1GB+ content of "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Setup Files\", not before you upgrade your NS6 latest version (required form migration), as each installer are also by design & not possible anywhere else, stored on the "C drive" !
Guess what: for your LAB, take 20 GB for C drive or more, no 12 GB, it is too short, all the same switching the Swap file another disk drive, remove uninstall pakage, change "temp" & "tmp" variables another letter driver, etc...

If you are a little disturb like me on the 1st try to see where "create package" is located...
Just clic on "Cancel" when displaying the "Suites list", confirm "yes" => and so you got the 1st screen above ;-)
Nice trick, thanks a lot

The CMS files are posted on a world-wide distributed hosting solution.  They are protected for download because of trade compliance requirements.  SIM downloads them locally for you and you will find them under c:\program files\altiris\symantec installation manager\installs\altiris.

I want to create an offline installation of NS 7 with CMS.  If I download the SIM installer, where are the CMS files?

With NS 6 I am able to point the updates to a directory location for updates that I have manually downloaded from solutionsam.

Does anyone know if there is a similar website for NS 7 applications?

I have been playing with this for awhile and looking to document. In using an offline installation I have seen far fewer installation errors on my Virtual Machine.
